the vestibular system and the role of the vestibular system in the genesis of neural plasticity.Recently,exper- iments on animals in centrifuges have increased because research in space is both expensive and difficult. Centri- fugal experiments are relatively easy to perform and the results can be extrapolated to space research and used to study vestibular function in general (Sondag et al, 1995).... y markedly attenuated the degree of c-fos mRNA expression. Glutamate receptor antagonist also dramatically attenuated the degree of c-fos mRNA expression. These results indicate that expression of c-fos mRNA in response to hypergravity occurs in the vestibular related tissues of the central nervous system, in which peripheral vestibular receptors and glutamate receptors play an important role. The temporal pattern of c-fos mRNA expression depended on the duration of the hypergravity stimulus. -

The aim of the present study was to observe time-dependent changes in long-term potentiation (LTP) at Schaffer collateral-CA1 synapses in the CA1 area of the hippocampus during vestibular compensation. inhibitory neur ons to the rostral ventro- lateral medullary nucleus (RVLM), an area containing pre- sympathetic neurons that inne rvate the intermediolateral cell column in the spinal cord [1,2]. Vestibular stimulation through postural changes elicits the activation of the sympathetic nervous system to control blood pressure, which is referred to as the vestibulosympa- thetic reflex [3,4]. The... Input signals originating from baroreceptors and vestibular receptors are integrated in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) to maintain blood pressure during postural movement. The contribution of baroreceptors and vestibular receptors in the maintenance of blood pressure following hypotension were quantitatively analyzed by measuring phosphorylated extracellular regulated protein kinase (pERK) expression and glutamate release in the RVLM. The expression of pERK and glutamate release in the... -

maintaining blood pres- sure from the vestibular end organs and the baroreceptors may be integrated in the RVLM. Key Words: Baroreceptor, Blood pressure, c-Fos protein, Rostral ventrolateral medulla, Vestibular system INTRODUCTION Vestibular system controls blood pressure and respira- tion by vestibulo-autonomic re flex through some interneur- ons [1]. Electrical or selective natural stimulation o... reduced c-Fos protein expression than that in the BL group, and the SAD+BL group showed less expression than that in the SAD group. These results suggest that the vestibular system cooperates with baroreceptors to maintain arterial pressure during hypotension but that baroreceptors regulate arterial pressure during both hypotension and hypertension. Additionally, afferent signals for maintaining blood pressure from the vestibular end organs and the baroreceptors may be integrated in the RVLM. -

the auditory brain- stem and central visual nerv ous system (Lane et al, 1996; Caicedo et al, 1997). However, there are only a few reports on the central vestibular system, and they mainly been fo- cused on the role of calcium-binding proteins as a marker of afferent input, by using calretinin only or calretinin and calbindin after the recovery of static vestibular symptoms (Sans et al, 1995;... Calcium (Ca2+) is an intracellular second messenger associated with neuronal plasticity of the central nervous system. The calcium-binding proteins regulate the Ca2+-mediated signals in the cytoplasm and buffer the calcium concentration. This study examined temporal changes of three calcium-binding proteins (calretinin, calbindin and parvalbumin) in the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) during vestibular compensation after unilateral labyrinthectomy (UL) in rats. Rats underwent UL, and the... -

the fourth ventricle. In the rat central nervous system, each locus coeruleus contains abou t 1500 cells, which accounts for approximately one-half of all norepinephrine-containing cells in the brain. Locus coeruleus is a major source of noradrenergic innerv ation to all levels of neuraxis, and involves attention, arousal, circadian rhythms, and chan- ging sensorimotor responsiveness (Moore... days, were used. After enzymatic digestion, dissociated medial vestibular neurons were transferred to a recording chamber mounted on an inverted microscope, and spontaneous action potentials were recorded by standard patch-clamp techniques. In current-clamp mode, the frequency of spontaneous action potential of medial vestibular nuclear neurons was decreased by phenylephrine (n=15). Phenylephrine increased the amplitude of afterhyperpolarization without changes in the resting membrane potential... -

by Labyrinthectomy 185 vestibular receptors. Excitation of the contralateral VN through the commissural system may also involve, in part, hypotension-induced expression of pERK1/2 in the VN. It is not clear, however, how reduced blood flow causes the activation of vestibular afferent signals in the peripheral vestibular receptors. One possible explanation is that the reduction of blood flow... in these nuclei occurred within 5 min after hemorrhage. However, in bilaterally labyrinthectomized rats, the appearance of pERK1/2-immunoreactive neurons was eliminated in the VN. Western blot confirmed the effect of bilateral labyrinthectomy on pERK1/2 protein expression in the medial vestibular nucleus 5 min after hemorrhage. These results suggest that, following acute hypotension, afferent signals from the peripheral vestibular receptors are required for activation of ERK 1/2 in the VN. -

activated by acute hemorrhage in the caudal MVN and about 4% of the cFos-immunopo sitive neurons in the MVN were double-labeled for CTb. Unilateral injury or stimu- lation of the peripheral vestibular system induces cFos protein expression in the vestibular nucleus as well as in several brain stem nuclei that have synaptic circuits within the vestibular system (Kaufman & Perachio, 1994;... The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the possible involvement of the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) and inferior vestibular nucleus (IVN) following acute hypotension in the vestibulo- autonomic reflex through vestibulosolitary or vestibuloventrolateral projections. Acute hypotension- induced cFos expression was assessed in combination with retrograde cholera toxin B subunit (CTb) tract tracing. After injection of CTb into the solitary region, CTb-labeled neurons were located...
