Background: Recent in vivo experimental evidence suggests that isoflurane-induced cardioprotection may involve KATP channel activation. However, it was demonstrated that isoflurane inhibited KATP channel activities in the inside-out patch mode. To explain this discrepancy, the present investigation tested the hypothesis that a metabolite of isoflurane, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), contributes to isoflurnae-induced cardioprotection via KATP channel activation during myocardial ischemia and... -

N ecrosis by Inhibiting its Metabolic Activation in Mice I Sun-Mee Lee\ Tai-Soon Cho\ and Young-Nam Cha 1 Department of Phanacology, College of Phanacy, Sung K yun K wan University, Suwon 440 -746; 2Department of Phanacology and Toxicology, College of Medicine, Inha University, Inchon 402-751, Korea Concomitant administration of a single acute dose of ethanol (4 g/kg) protected mice... of acetaminophen metabolites (glucuronide, sulfate and cysteine conjugates) were decreased, the level of unmetabolized acetaminophen was increased. Our findings suggest that co-administration of an acute dose of ethanol reduces the degree of hepatocellular necrosis produced by a large dose of acetaminophen and this ethanol dependent protection is, in major part, afforded by suppression of the hepatic microsomal mixed function oxidase activity catalyzing the metabolic activation of acetaminophen. -

Discussion 3.1. Textural properties and pore structure The nitrogen isotherms of the samples were plotted to investigate the effects of the activation conditions on the pore structure, as presented in Fig. 2. The non-activated sample CF showed no change on nitrogen adsorption, indicating a non-porous material. However, in the case of the activated samples (HACF-20, HACF-40, HACF-60 and HACF-80), a... -

in the activation of type I interferon(IFN) immune response in olive flounder [2]. IFNs initiate intracellularantimicrobial response which then influence the development of both innate andadaptive immune responses [3]. IFN is considered to be one of the mostessential components of the immune system because of its ability in suppressingviral replication; hence, making it the main emphasis of... -

in vitro maturation (IVM) and subsequent embryonic development after parthenogenetic activation (PA). Materials and Methods: We were investigated the effect of GDF8 and SB treatment during IVM on nuclear maturation, intracellular glutathione (GSH), reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, analyzed specific gene transcription and translation levels in cumulus cells after IVM, and embryonic... -

newly identified CG301269 improves lipid and glucose metabolism without body weight gain through activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor . Diabetes 2011, 60, 496-506. 18. Kim SK, Kim HJ, Hur KY, Choi SH, Ahn CW, Lim SK, Kim KR, Lee HC, Huh KB, Cha BS. Visceral fat th ickness measured by ultrasonography can estimate not only visceral obesity but also risks of cardiovascular... Obesity has increased continuously in western countries during the last several decades and recently become a problem in developing countries. Currently, anti-obesity drugs originating from natural products are being investigated for their potential to overcome adverse effects associated with chemical drugs. Artemisinic acid, which was isolated from the well-known anti-malaria herb Artemisia annua (AA) L., was recently shown to possess anti-adipogenic effects in vitro. However, the... -
Canine model of ischemic stroke with permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion: clinical features, magnetic resonance imaging, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry

complex and involves diverse mechanisms including cytokine-mediated inflammation, energy failure, loss of cellular ion homeostasis, acidosis, increased intracellular calcium levels, excitotoxicity, free radical-mediated damage, generation of arachidonic acid products, complement activation, disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), glial cell activation, and leukocyte infiltration [16].... The purpose of this study was to identify time-related changes in clinical, MRI, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical findings associated with ischemic stroke in dogs. Additionally, the association of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and tissue levels of interleukin (IL)-6 with clinical prognosis was assessed. Ischemic stroke was induced by permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in nine healthy experimental dogs. The dogs were divided into three groups... -
β-irradiation (Ho patch)-induced skin injury in mini-pigs: effects on NF-κB and COX-2 expression in the skin

[24,30,31]. In the current study, increased levels of NF-B and COX-2 in -irradiated epidermal cells were found. It is likely that normal tissues differ in their sensitivity to radiation-induced activation of NF-B and COX-2 expression, and that these differences correlate with susceptibility to radiation-associated damage [6]. However, the mechanisms underlying differences in the effects of... In the present study, the detrimental effect of β-emission on pig skin was evaluated. Skin injury was modeled in mini-pigs by exposing the animals to 50 and 100 Gy of β-emission delivered by Ho patches. Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical changes in exposed skin were monitored for 18 weeks after β-irradiation. Radiation induced desquamation at 2∼4 weeks and gradual repair of this damage was evident 6 weeks after irradiation. Changes in basal cell density... -

Fig. 4. Changes in cumulative apoptotic cell ratio (live, early apoptotic, apoptotic/dead, and dead) as determined by assay of apoptotic status based on caspase-3/7 activation of SH-SY5Y cells exposed to various concentrations of fucoidan and 6-OHDA, measured by flow cytometry (A). Representative flow cytometric data are shown in (B). Apoptotic cell ratio by caspase-3/7 activation was observed 24...
