of excitable tissues [40]. Voltage-gated Ca 2+ channels are divided into six subtypes, i.e., L, N, P, Q, R, and T-types, based on the pore-forming a-subunits [26,43]. Of these, T-type Ca 2+ channels have a low activation threshold; however, other Ca 2+ channel subtypes need higher voltage stimuli to be activated. The voltage-gated Ca 2+ currents recorded from Vmes neurons might be mediated by... voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels were significantly inhibited by an acidic pH. The application of an acidic pH solution significantly shifted the current-voltage and conductance-voltage relationships to the depolarization range. The modulation of several voltage-dependent ion channels by an acidic pH might affect the excitability of mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus neurons, and thus physiological functions mediated by the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus could be affected in acidic pH conditions. -

shape and creation of aqueous pores through which molecules can pass [4,23]. Application of an electrical field at strengths above tissue-specific critical threshold values causes cell death in the treated volume via irreversible electroporation (IRE) [6]. It has been reported that certain electric field parameters can induce IRE without causing thermal damage to treated tissue [6,21], a... This study describes the neuropathologic features of normal canine brain ablated with non-thermal irreversible electroporation (N-TIRE). The parietal cerebral cortices of four dogs were treated with N-TIRE using a dose-escalation protocol with an additional dog receiving sham treatment. Animals were allowed to recover following N-TIRE ablation and the effects of treatment were monitored with clinical and magnetic resonance imaging examinations. Brains were subjected to histopathologic and... -

msec duration at 1.2 times the threshold voltage using an electronic stimulator (Narco Biosystem, USA). The isometric tension that developed in the preparation was measured using a force transducer (Cambridge Technology, USA) and recorded on a physiograph (Gould, USA). Solutions The muscle preparation was superfused continuously at 50 ± 2 ml/10 min with a Tyrode solution containing (in mM): NaCl... A change in pH can alter the intracellular concentration of electrolytes such as intracellular Ca2+ and Na+ ([Na+]i) that are important for the cardiac function. For the determination of the role of pH in the cardiac magnesium homeostasis, the intracellular Mg 2+ concentration ([Mg 2+]i), membrane potential and contraction in the papillary muscle of guinea pigs using ion-selective electrodes changing extracellular pH ([pH]o)or intracellular pH ([pH ]i )were measured in this study. Fifty cathodic phase-1st biphasic current pulses (duration 500 μs, intensity 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 μA) were applied at every 1 sec. We compared false positive error and false negative error in FB filter and TP-adopted FB filter. By implementing TP-adopted FB filter, short-latency spike can be detected better regarding sensitivity and specificity for detecting spikes regardless of the strength of stimulus and the distance between stimulus and recording electrodes. -

we be- lieve that our results are more applicable to retinal prostheses. Using dissociated cerebral cortical neurons Wagenaar et al. [24] showed that pulse shape efficacy is best with bipha- sic negative then positive (equ ivalent to our biphasic catho- dic phase-1 st pulse). Recently, Boinagrov et al. [39] also showed that cathodic epiretinal stimulation exhibit the lowest threshold for di-... A retinal prosthesis is being developed for the restoration of vision in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Determining optimal electrical stimulation parameters for the prosthesis is one of the most important elements for the development of a viable retinal prosthesis. Here, we investigated the effects of different charge-balanced biphasic pulses with regard to their effectiveness in evoking retinal ganglion cell (RGC) responses. Retinal... -

x threshold voltage) (Fig. 1A). The ePSA appeared at the latent time of 12±1.0 msec af- ter electrical stimulation. It was estimated as the voltage from the midpoint between th e two shoulders of the first and second positive waves to the peak of maximal neg- ativity (Fig. 1B). To measure the ePSA corresponding to the extracellular field potential evoked by an afferent vol- ley, the recording... We studied the sex different nicotine effect on evoked population spike amplitudes (ePSA) and connexin (Cx) expression in the hippocampus CA1 area of gerbils. Acute doses of nicotine bitartrate (0.5 mg/kg: NT-0.5) slightly reduced ePSA in males but markedly augmented that in females. Acute NT (5.0 mg/kg) markedly increased the ePSA in all gerbils. Unlike acute NT-0.5, repeated NT-0.5 injection (twice a day for 7 days) significantly increased the ePSA in males and slightly affected the NT-0.5... -

of the membrane lipid shifted steady state voltage-dependent inacti vation of N-type Ca 2+ channel to- ward more negative potentials [36]. CA, due to its amphi- patic nature, may also affect local lipid environment sim- ilarly and modify inactivation property of N-type Ca 2+ channel. One mechanism generating null sweeps may be inactivation from intermediate closed states of the channel on its... Under some pathological conditions as bile flow obstruction or liver diseases with the enterohepatic circulation being disrupted, regurgitation of bile acids into the systemic circulation occurs and the plasma level of bile acids increases. Bile acids in circulation may affect the nervous system. We examined this possibility by studying the effects of bile acids on gating of neuronal (N)-type Ca2+ channel that is essential for neurotransmitter release at synapses of the peripheral and central... -

Based on the solutions of these equations and potassium channel blocker experiments, we found that, as temperature increases, the maximum value of the potassium channel relaxation time constant, Քn(t) increases, but the maximum value of the probabilities of openings for activation of the potassium channels, n(t) decreases. Accordingly, the voltage-dependent potassium current is likely to play a leading role in the temperature-dependent changes in the firing patterns in Aplysia neurons. -
