후기 비트겐슈타인을 선험적 시각으로 이해하려는 시도에 대한 비판은 선험적 관념론에 대한 오해에 근거하고 있다. 후기 비트겐슈타인을 선험적 시각으로 이해할 수 있는 근거는 개념적, 문법적 선제성과 후기 비트겐슈타인의 메타철학 때문이다. 리어는 후기 비트겐슈타인을 선험적 관념론의 비트겐슈타인적 형태로, 혹은 선험적 인간학으로 이해한다. 그러나 리어의 비트겐슈타인은 선험적 관념론의 핵심이라고 할 수 있는 개념적, 문법적 선제성과 감성적 제약을 분명하게 보여주고 있지 않다.
