The Story of Minh: The Lifeworld of a Marriage-Labor Immigrant Mother
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 26 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.3 1 1-26 (26 pages)
about mothering and marriage-labor immigrant families in the Korean context. To examine disparities and contradictions that emerged from my multiple ethnographic interviews with Minh between 2013 and 2015, I use Bakhtin’s idea of heteroglossia as an analytic tool. The paper concludes by discussing the need for establishing renewed perspectives on the role of “Koreanness,” the complexities of marriage-labor immigrants’ lifeworlds, and mothering as cultural, emotional, and affective labor. -
Children’s Understanding of Racial Diversity through Role-Play: A Case Study of Kindergarteners in South Korea
Su-Jeong Wee, So Jung Kim, Kyoung Jin Kim Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 25 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.2 7 125-149 (25 pages)
a startling paucity of studies examining the effectiveness of role-play in teaching kindergarteners multiracial and ethnic awareness. This qualitative case study examines how South Korean kindergarteners develop their perception and understanding of racial and cultural diversity through role-plays. 25 five year-old children and their parents and teacher were participated. The data were collected in a metropolitan city in Korea for three months through participatory observations, interviews with... -
Young Chinese-Australian Children’s Use of Technology at Home: Parents’ and Grandparents’ Views
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages

planes of analysis. We found that these children lived in technology-rich environments, however strongly held values and beliefs associated with academic learning resulted in the creation of family rules and practices that limited children’s access to, and use of, different technologies. We argue that an understanding of family values, beliefs, practices and culture will assist educators to build partnerships effectively with families, and enhance learning opportunities for young children. -
The Power of Harmony: Insights from a Korean Children’s Community-Based Chorus
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 23 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.1 2 21-43 (23 pages)
interviews of Korean early childhood educators and Korean immigrant parents within the sociocultural framework, this study makes visible the meanings of engaging in a community-based children’s musical experience. Findings indicate that both groups of early childhood educators and Korean parents found that engaging in a community-based chorus provided developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive experiences for young children and their families. These findings suggest that the nature o... -
BETTER THAN Bubble WRAP: Do We “Over Regulate and Over Protect” Children at the Expense of Them Learning How to “Take Risks”?
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 17 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.1 6 111-127 (17 pages)
and enforce safe practices. However, in some cases this has brought about an over regulated and over protective societal change. Experiences and tasks once enjoyed by children are now often regarded as dangerous and irresponsible. The freedom of children to experience life in a way that allows them to develop competencies they need to become competent risk managers can be been hampered by over regulation of governing bodies and over protective practices of parents and caregivers, creating a... -
A Cultural-Historical View of Child Development: Key Concepts for Going Beyond a Universal View of the Child
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 19 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.1 2 19-37 (19 pages)
of conceptualizing children’s development (Hedegaard & Fleer, 2013). In drawing upon cultural-historical theory, this paper argues for a more localised and nuanced conception of human development. Through analyzing how society creates the conditions for children’s development (Hedegaard, 2012), this paper presents a view of development that captures both a traditional (historical lived in the present moment) and contemporary (new cultural technologies) view of children’s lived experiences. -
Emotions of expatriate children and families transitioning into Malaysia: A cultural historical perspective
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 23 Pages

the support of the mother and teacher (Vygotsky, 1987). Further findings reveal that the absence of everyday routines adds to the range of heightened emotions felt by the individual child and collectively in the family and attending school is one of the first stable routines that the child undertakes. It is argued that a cultural-historical reading of this situation offers a different perspective and beginning theorization on the emotional development of children transitioning internationally. -
“Raising a Socially Competent Child”: Unpacking the Concept of Social Competence
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 6 93-114 (22 pages)
comparing and contrasting them with cultural psychological studies on cultural practices of socialization and teaching. By doing so, I discuss both relatively overemphasized and neglected perspectives of young children’s socialization in the field. Finally, I discuss the educational implications of cultural diversity in the conceptualization of and cultural practices of social competence and call for the appreciation and empowerment of diverse values and characteristics of social competence. -
A Cultural-Historical Reading of the Emotional Development of Young Children
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 4 47-67 (21 pages)
The telling of fairytales has been a longstanding practice within the field of early childhood education in many communities across the Asia Pacific region. But what do we know about how educators use fairytales for the development of emotions for preschool aged children? In drawing upon culturalhistorical theory (Vygotsky, 1971, 1987, 1999), this paper presents the findings of a study into how fairytales were introduced to preschool aged children (n=30; from 3.3 to 5.3 years with mean age 4.2... -
Empathy and Intersubjectivity in Culture: From Studies of Young Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 19 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 3 27-45 (19 pages)
a cross-cultural study of early childhood teachers’ perspectives on ADHD that I conducted a few years ago. I then describe peer relations of children with ADHD based on both a review of relevant literature and an initial analysis of my current study on young children considered at-risk of being diagnosed with ADHD. I conclude with implications of these studies for reexamining the construct of empathy, building intersubjective pedagogy, and considering empathy and intersubjectivity in culture.
