Improving dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene using a common non-covalent modifier
Youbin Kwon, Wonbo Shim, Seung-Yeol Jeon, Ji-Ho Youk, Woong-Ryeol Yu 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 9 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.20 8 53-61 (9 pages)
The reportedly synergistic effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene hybrids have prompted strong demand for an efficient modifier to enhance their dispersion. Here, we investigated the ability of poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) to overcome the van der Waals interaction of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) and graphene by employing a simple wrapping process involving ultrasonication and subsequent centrifugation of PAN/MWCNT/graphene solutions. The physical wrapping of MWCNTs and graphene with PAN was... -
Activating needle coke to develop anode catalyst for direct methanol fuel cell
Young Hun Park, Ui-Su Im, Byung-Rok Lee, Dong-Hyun Peck, Sang-Kyung Kim, Young Woo Rhee, Doo-Hwan Jung 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.20 7 47-52 (6 pages)
Physical and electrochemical qualities were analyzed after KOH activation of a direct methanol fuel cell using needle coke as anode supporter. The results of research on support loaded with platinum-ruthenium suggest that an activated KOH needle coke container has the lowest onset potential and the highest degree of catalyst activity among all commercial catalysts. Through an analysis of the CO stripping voltammetry, we found that KOH activated catalysis showed a 21% higher electrochemical... -
Effects of maleic anhydride content on mechanical properties of carbon fibers-reinforced maleic anhydride-grafted-polypropylene matrix composites
Hyun-Il Kim, Woong Han, Woong-Ki Choi, Soo-Jin Park, Kay-Hyeok An, Byung-Joo Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.20 6 39-46 (8 pages)
In this work, the effects of maleic anhydride (MA) content on mechanical properties of chopped carbon fibers (CFs)-reinforced MA-grafted-polypropylene (MAPP) matrix composites. A direct oxyfluorination on CF surfaces was applied to increase the interfacial strength between the CFs and MAPP matrix. The mechanical properties of the CFs/MAPP composites are likely to be different in terms of MA content. Surface characteristics were observed by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared... -
Pitch-based carbon fibers from coal tar or petroleum residue under the same processing condition
Jiyoung Kim, Ui-Su Im, Byungrok Lee, Dong-Hyun Peck, Seong-Ho Yoon, Doo-Hwan Jung 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.19 9 72-78 (7 pages)
Spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were successfully prepared from petroleum or coal pyrolysis residues. After pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO), slurry oil, and coal tar were simply filtered to eliminate the solid impurities, the characteristics of the raw materials were evaluated by elemental analysis, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS), and so on. Spinnable pitches were prepared for melt-spinning... -
Waste coffee grounds-derived nanoporous carbon nanosheets for supercapacitors
Min Hong Park, Young Soo Yun, Se Youn Cho, Na Rae Kim, Hyoung-Joon Jin 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.19 8 66-71 (6 pages)
The development of nanostructured functional materials derived from biomass and/or waste is of growing importance for creating sustainable energy-storage systems. In this study, nanoporous carbonaceous materials containing numerous heteroatoms were fabricated from waste coffee grounds using a top-down process via simple heating with KOH. The nanoporous carbon nanosheets exhibited notable material properties such as high specific surface area (1960.1 m2 g?1), numerous redox-active heteroatoms... -
Effects of electrochemical oxidation of carbon fibers on interfacial shear strength using a micro-bond method
Dong-Kyu Kim, Kay-Hyeok An, Yun Hyuk Bang, Lee-Ku Kwac, Sang-Yub Oh, Byung-Joo Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.19 4 32-39 (8 pages)
(CFs) on interfacial adhesion between CF and epoxy resin with various current densities. The surface morphologies and properties of the CFs before and after electrochemical-oxidation-treatment were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and single-fiber contact angle. The mechanical interfacial shear strength of the CFs/epoxy matrix composites was investigated by using a... -
Cellulose-based carbon fibers prepared using electron-beam stabilization
Min Il Kim, Mi-Seon Park, Young-Seak Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.18 9 56-61 (6 pages)
Cellulose fibers were stabilized by treatment with an electron-beam (E-beam). The properties of the stabilized fibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The E-beam-stabilized cellulose fibers were carbonized in N₂ gas at 800°C for 1 h, and their carbonization yields were measured. The structure of the cellulose fibers was determined to have changed to hemicellulose and... -
Sorption behavior of slightly reduced, three-dimensionally macroporous graphene oxides for physical loading of oils and organic solvents
Ho Seok Park, Sung Oong Kang 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.18 4 24-29 (6 pages)
High pollutant-loading capacities (up to 319 times its own weight) are achieved by three-dimensional (3D) macroporous, slightly reduced graphene oxide (srGO) sorbents, which are prepared through ice-templating and consecutive thermal reduction. The reduction of the srGO is readily controlled by heating time under a mild condition (at 1 10?2 Torr and 200°C). The saturated sorption capacity of the hydrophilic srGO sorbent (thermally reduced for 1 h) could not be improved further even though the... -
Microstructural changes of polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers (T300 and T700) due to isothermal oxidation (1): focusing on morphological changes using scanning electron microscopy
Seong-Moon Oh, Sang-Min Lee, Dong-Su Kang, Jae-Seung Roh 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.18 3 18-23 (6 pages)
Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers have high specific strength, elastic modulus, thermal resistance, and thermal conductivity. Due to these properties, they have been increasingly widely used in various spheres including leisure, aviation, aerospace, military, and energy applications. However, if exposed to air at high temperatures, they are oxidized, thus weakening the properties of carbon fibers and carbon composite materials. As such, it is important to understand the oxidation...
