The aim of the present study was to determine whether serotonergic drugs could reverse lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anorexia in rats. LPS (500μg/kg body weight) and all serotonergic drugs, except for 8-OH-DPAT (subcutaneous), were injected intraperitoneally into Sprague-Dawley rats. Without the LPS injection, 8-OH-DPAT (1A agonist), metergoline (1/2 antagonist), and mianserin (2A/2C antagonist) exerted no effects on food intake at any of the doses tested, but ketanserin (2A antagonist)... -

Serotonin (5-hydroxytroptamine, 5-HT) has been shown to affect the induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) in the cortex such as the hippocampus, the visual cortex and the prefrontal cortex. Fluoxetine, as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is used in the management of a wide variety of psychological diseases. To study the effect of fluoxetine on the induction of LTP, we recorded the field potential in layer II/III of the frontal cortex from 3-wk-old. LTP was induced in horizontal input... -
Characterization of Acetylcholine-induced Currents in Male Rat Pelvic Ganglion Neurons

The pelvic ganglia provide autonomic innervations to the various urogenital organs, such as the urinary bladder, prostate, and penis. It is well established that both sympathetic and parasympathetic synaptic transmissions in autonomic ganglia are mediated mainly by acetylcholine (ACh). Until now, however, the properties of ACh-induced currents and its receptors in pelvic ganglia have not clearly been elucidated. In the present study, biophysical characteristics and molecular nature of nicotinic... -

To investigate the effect of fluoxetine, one of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), on the immune system, human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were treated with fluoxetine (107 M) for 24 h, and immune-related genes were analyzed by cDNA microarray. Expression of the immune- related genes such as CD107b (LAMP-2), CD47 receptor (thrombospondin receptor), CD5 antigen-like (scavenger receptor cysteine rich family), copine III (CPNE3), interleukin (IL)-18... -
Modulation of L-type Ca2+ Channel Currents by Various Protein Kinase Activators and Inhibitors in Rat Clonal Pituitary GH3 Cell Line
YoungMinBae, Hye-JungBaek, HanaCho, YungEEarm, Won-KyungHo 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.2 4 139-146 (8 pages)
L-type Ca2 channels play an important role in regulating cytosolic Ca2 and thereby regulating hormone secretions in neuroendocrine cells. Since hormone secretions are also regulated by various kinds of protein kinases, we investigated the role of some kinase activators and inhibitors in the regulation of the L-type Ca2 channel currents in rat pituitary GH3 cells using the patch-clamp technique. Phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate (PDBu), a protein kinase C (PKC) activator, and... -
Endotoxin-induced Acute Lung Injury is Mediated by PAF Produced via Remodelling of Lyso PAF in the Lungs
YoungManLee, TeoanKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2000, Vol.4 No.3 6 219-226 (8 pages)
In order to elucidate the role of platelet activating factor (PAF) in the acute lung injury induced by endotoxin (ETX), activities of phospholipase A2, lyso PAF acetyltransferase and oxidative stress by neutrophilic respiratory burst were probed in the present study. To induce acute lung injury, 100μg of E.coli ETX (type 0127; B8) was instilled directly into the tracheae of Sprague-Dawley rats. Five hours after the ETX instillation, induction of acute lung injury was confirmed by lung leak... -

Previously, we have reported that p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), a serotonin depletor, profoundly increased pancreatic fluid and bicarbonate secretion but remarkably inhibited pancreatic amylase secretion in anesthetized rats. The present study was performed to verify the detailed effects of PCPA on pancreatic amylase synthesis that is directly related to amylase exocrine secretion. PCPA significantly decreased pancreatic RNA and protein contents as well as the amylase activity. However,... -

Although importance of intrapancreatic neurons containing gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) in control of exocrine secretion has been raised, the nature of GRP in the pancreas is unclear. Thus, the present study was undertaken to see distribution, content and molecular heterogeneity of immunoreactive GRP in the rat pancreas. Content of immunoreactive GRP in the rat pancreas was 2.99 ⁑ 0.66 ng/g wet tissues determined by radioimmunoassay. Immunoreactive GRP was most abundantly expressed in... -
Thyroid Hormone-Induced Alterations of Ryanodine and Dihydropyridine Receptor Protein Expression in Rat Heart
HaeWonKim, MiyoungPark, EunHeeLee, HyoungJinCho, HeeRanLee 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.3 11 329-337 (9 pages)
Thyroid hormone-induced cellular dysfunctions may be associated with changes in the intracellular Ca2 concentration. The ryanodine receptor, a Ca2 release channel of the SR, is responsible for the rapid release of Ca2 that activates cardiac muscle contraction. In the excitation-contaction coupling cascade, activation of ryanodine receptors is initiated by the activity of sarcolemmal Ca2 channels, the dihydropyridine receptors. In hyperthyroidism left ventricular... -
Thyroid Hormone-Induced Alterations of Ca2+-ATPase and Phospholamban Protein Expression in Cardiac Sarcoplasmic Reticulum
HaeWonKim, KyungMinNoh, MiyoungPark, HeeRanLee, EunHeeLee 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.2 13 223-230 (8 pages)
Alterations of cardiovascular function associated with various thyroid states have been studied. In hyperthyroidism left ventricular contractility and relaxation velocity were increased, whereas these parameters were decreased in hypothyroidism. The mechanisms for these changes have been suggested to include alterations in the expression and/or activity levels of various proteins; α-myosin heavy chain, β- myosin heavy chain, β-receptors, the guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory protein, and...
