Adenosine and its analogues are known to possess analgesic effects and to be involved in the opiate-induced antinociception as well. This study was designed to investigate the effects of three adenosine agonists, 5 - (N-cyclopropyl) -carboxamidoadenosine(CPCA), 5 -N-ethylcarboxamidoadeno-sine (NECA) and N6-cyclohexyladenosine (CHA) on the signal transmission in the spinal cord and also to elucidate mechanisms of their actions in the anesthetized cat. All the tested adenosine agonists(i.v,)... -

efficacy of commissural transmission between lateral giants, as indicated by a significant reduction of commissural delay. This effect was blocked by an octopamine antagonist phentolamine, suggesting a specific action of octopamine on the octopamine receptor present on LGs. These observations suggest that both traumatic shocks and octopamine may cause a rather broad alteration in the excitability of the crayfish nervous system that contributes to the sensitization of the LG escape response. -

The effects of prolactin and vasopressin on the regulation of amniotic fluid (AF) volume and its Na+ concentration Na+ through the membrane surrounding the AF during increase in AF volume due to fetal urination were studied. About 70% of AF volume was replaced with normal isotonic saline solution. Isotonic saline solution (0.5 ml) containing Censored and LiCl was introduced into each amniotic sac. Vasopressin (25 ng/ml) or prolactin (1 mg/ml) of AF was then injected into experimental amniotic... -

the central nervous system nuclei. The effects of γ-aminobutyric acid(GABA) and glycine on retinal neurons were explored to discern the mechanisms of action of neurotransmitters. Experiments were performed in the superfused retina-eyecup preparation of the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, using intracellular electrophysiological techniques. The roles of GABA and glycine as inhibitory neurotransmitters are well established in the vertebrate retina. But, we found that the depolarizing action... -

In patients with epilepsy, depression is a common comorbidity but difficult to be treated because many antidepressants cause pro-convulsive effects. Thus, it is important to identify the risk of seizures associated with antidepressants. To determine whether paroxetine, a very potent selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), interacts with ion channels that modulate neuronal excitability, we examined the effects of paroxetine on Kv3.1 potassium channels, which contribute to high-frequency... -

Flavonoids have been shown to affect calcium signaling in neurons. However, there are no reports on the effect of apigenin on glutamate-induced calcium signaling in neurons. We investigated whether apigenin affects glutamate-induced increase of free intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) in cultured rat hippocampal neurons, using fura-2-based digital calcium imaging and microfluorimetry. The hippocampal neurons were used between 10 and 13 days in culture from embryonic day 18 rats.... -

Previous studies have suggested that brain stem noradrenergic inputs differentially modulate neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Here, we compared the effects of norepinephrine (NE) on spontaneous GABAergic inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) in identified PVN neurons using slice patch technique. In 17 of 18 type I neurons, NE (30∼100μM) reversibly decreased sIPSC frequency to 41⁑7% of the baseline value (4.4⁑0.8 Hz, p<0.001). This effect was blocked by yohimbine...
