Regulation of Ca2+ Signaling in Pulmonary Hypertension
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2013, Vol.17 No.1 1 1-8 (8 pages)
Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the development and progression of pulmonary hypertension (PH) remains imperative if we are to successfully improve the quality of life and life span of patients with the disease. A whole plethora of mechanisms are associated with the development and progression of PH. Such complexity makes it difficult to isolate one particular pathway to target clinically. Changes in intracellular free calcium concentration, the most common... -
Oxygen/Glucose Deprivation and Reperfusion Cause Modifications of Postsynaptic Morphology and Activity in the CA3 Area of Organotypic Hippocampal Slice Cultures
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2012, Vol.16 No.6 8 423-429 (7 pages)
Brain ischemia leads to overstimulation of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, referred as excitotoxicity, which mediates neuronal cell death. However, less attention has been paid to changes in synaptic activity and morphology that could have an important impact on cell function and survival following ischemic insult. In this study, we investigated the effects of reperfusion after oxygen/glucose deprivation (OGD) not only upon neuronal cell death, but also on ultrastructural and biochemical... -
Yoga Training Improves Metabolic Parameters in Obese Boys
DaeYunSeo, SungRyulLee, ArturoFigueroa, HyoungKyuKim, YeongHoBaek, YiSubKwak, NariKim, TaeHoonChoi, ByoungDooRhee, KyungSooKo, ByungJooPar 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2012, Vol.16 No.3 4 175-180 (6 pages)
Yoga has been known to have stimulatory or inhibitory effects on the metabolic parameters and to be uncomplicated therapy for obesity. The purpose of the present study was to test the effect of an 8-week of yoga-asana training on body composition, lipid profile, and insulin resistance (IR) in obese adolescent boys. Twenty volunteers with body mass index (BMI) greater than the 95th percentile were randomly assigned to yoga (age 14.7±0.5 years, n=10) and control groups (age 14.6±1.0 years,... -
Effects of Protopanaxatriol-Ginsenoside Metabolites on Rat N-Methyl-D-Aspartic Acid Receptor-Mediated Ion Currents
Tae-JoonShin, Sung-HeeHwang, Sun-HyeChoi, Byung-HwanLee, JiyeonKang, Hyeon-JoongKim, R.SuzanneZukin, HyewhonRhim, Seung-YeolNah 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2012, Vol.16 No.2 5 113-118 (6 pages)
Ginsenosides are low molecular weight glycosides found in ginseng that exhibit neuroprotective effects through inhibition of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor channel activity. Ginsenosides, like other natural compounds, are metabolized by gastric juices and intestinal microorganisms to produce ginsenoside metabolites. However, little is known about how ginsenoside metabolites regulate NMDA receptor channel activity. In the present study, we investigated the effects of ginsenoside... -
Ghrelin Protects Spinal Cord Motoneurons Against Chronic Glutamate Excitotoxicity by Inhibiting Microglial Activation
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2012, Vol.16 No.1 7 43-48 (6 pages)
as previously reported. Ghrelin prevented THA-induced microglial activation in the spinal cord and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-Ձ and interleukin-1Ղ. Our data indicate that ghrelin may act as a survival factor for motoneurons by functioning as a microglia- deactivating factor and suggest that ghrelin may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of ALS and other neurodegenerative disorders where inflammatory responses play a critical role. -
Cytotoxicities and Quantitative Structure Activity Relationships of B13 Sulfonamides in HT-29 and A549 Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2011, Vol.15 No.6 14 423-430 (8 pages)
B13 analogues are being considered as therapeutic agents for cancer cells, since B13 is a ceramide analogue and inhibits ceramidase to promote apoptosis in cancer cells. B13 sulfonamides are assumed to have biological activity similar to B13, since they are made by bioisosterically substituting the carboxyl moiety of B13 with sulfone group. Twenty B13 sulfonamides were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicities against human colon cancer HT-29 and lung cancer A549 cell lines using MTT assays.... -
Myoplasmic [Ca2+], Crossbridge Phosphorylation and Latch in Rabbit Bladder Smooth Muscle
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2011, Vol.15 No.3 8 171-177 (7 pages)
Tonic smooth muscle exhibit the latch phenomenon: high force at low myosin regulatory light chains (MRLC) phosphorylation, shortening velocity (Vo), and energy consumption. However, the kinetics of MRLC phosphorylation and cellular activation in phasic smooth muscle are unknown. The present study was to determine whether Ca2+-stimulated MRLC phosphorylation could suffice to explain the agonist- or high K+-induced contraction in a fast, phasic smooth muscle. We measured myoplasmic [Ca2+], MRLC... -
HO-1 Induced by Cilostazol Protects Against TNF-α-associated Cytotoxicity via a PPAR-γ-dependent Pathway in Human Endothelial Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2011, Vol.15 No.2 2 83-88 (6 pages)
A large body of evidence has indicated that induction of endogenous antioxidative proteins seems to be a reasonable strategy for delaying the progression of cell injury. In our previous study, cilostazol was found to increase the expression of the antioxidant enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in synovial cells. Thus, the present study was undertaken to examine whether cilostazol is able to counteract tumor necrosis factor-Ձ (TNF-Ձ)-induced cell death in endothelial cells via the... -
