Melatonin, a pineal gland hormone, is believed to act as an antioxidant via the stimulation of radical detoxifying enzymes and scavenging of free radicals. In this study, effects of in vitro and in vivo treatments of melatonin on the cisplatin-induced lipid peroxidation, LDH release and plasma creatinine were determined in rabbit renal cortical cells. The level of malondialdehyde (MDA) was assayed as an index of lipid peroxidation and the level of LDH release as an indicator of cellular damage.... -
Dual Effect of Dynorphin A on Single-Unit Spike Potentials in Rat Trigeminal Nucleus
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.3 3 213-221 (9 pages)
The amygdala is known as a site for inducing analgesia, but its action on the trigeminal nucleus has not been known well. Little information is available on the effect of dynorphin on NMDA receptor-mediated electrophysiological events in the trigeminal nucleus. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the single neuron spikes at the trigeminal nucleus caused by the amygdala and the action of dynorphin on the trigeminal nucleus. In the present study, extracellular single unit... -
Increase of Peroxynitrite Production in the Rat Brain Following Transient Forebrain Ischemia

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.3 2 205-212 (8 pages)
It has been proposed that nitirc oxide is involved in the pathogenesis of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion. Because superoxide production is also enhanced during reperfusion, the cytotoxic oxidant peroxynitrite could be formed, but it is not known if this occurs following global forebrain ischemia-reperfusion. We examined whether peroxynitrite generation is increased in the vulnerable regions after forebrain ischemia- reperfusion. Transient forebrain ischemia was produced in the conscious rat by... -
Real Physiological Neuronal Responses Revealed by Gramicidin Perforated Patch Recording
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.3 1 199-204 (6 pages)
In order to understand the phenomenon in a living cell correctly, it has been required to obtain intact responses from the cell membrane without disrupting the cytoplasmic circumstances. Gramicidin perforated patch configuration allows the electrical access to the whole cell with a minimal dialysis of cytoplasm and preventing the loss of native intracellular constituents, such as Cl. Here, we would like to show the background of this method and the actual application of the gramicidin... -
Block of ATP-Sensitive K Channels Expressed in Xenopus Oocytes by Dimethyl Sulfoxide
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.2 6 157-163 (7 pages)
The effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were studied in two groups of Xenopus oocytes, one expressing ATP sensitive K (KATP) channel comprised of sulfonylurea receptor SUR1 and inwardly rectifying K channel subunit Kir6.2, and the other expressing renal KATP channel ROMK2. At concentrations of 0.3∼10% (vol/vol) DMSO inhibited whole cell Kir6.2/SUR1 currents elicited by bath application of sodium azide (3 mM) in a concentration-dependent manner. The inhibition constant and Hill coefficient... -
DAMGO, a μ-Opioid Agonist and Cholecystokinin-Octapeptide Have Dual Modulatory Effects on Capsaicin-Activated Current in Rat Dorsal Root Ganglion Neurons
Su-YongEun, JimokKim, JihyeLee, SungJunJung, JooMinPark, YunKyungPark, DongkwanKim, SangJeongKim, JiyeonKwak, JunKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages

Capsaicin, a pungent ingredient of hot pepper, elicits an intense burning pain when applied cutaneously and intradermally. Activation of capsaicin-gated channel in C-type dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons produces nonselective cationic currents. Although electrophysiological and biochemical properties of capsaicin-activated current (ICAP) were studied, the regulatory mechanism and intracellular signaling pathway are still unclear. In the present study, we investigated the modulations of ICAP... -
Pulse Exposure to Ethanol Augments Vascular Contractility Through Stress Response
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.1 7 47-53 (7 pages)
Drinking excessive alcohol has been recognized as a risk factor for hypertension. However, the mechanism by which alcohol intake causes hypertension still remains elusive. We tested the hypothesis that ethanol itself acts as a stress factor on vasculature and indirectly modulates vascular contractility. After end of exposure to 1, 2.5 and 5% ethanol for 45 min, rat aortic strips were subjected to contractile responses, immunoblot for Hsp70 and the measurement of levels of myosin light chain... -
Altered Delayed Rectifier K+ Current of Rabbit Coronary Arterial Myocytes in Isoproterenol-Induced Hypertrophy
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.1 5 33-40 (8 pages)
The aim of present study was to define the cellular mechanisms underlying changes in delayed rectifier K (KDR) channel function in isoproterenol-induced hypertrophy. It has been proposed that KDR channels play a role in regulation of vascular tone by limiting membrane depolarization in arterial smooth muscle cells. The alterations of the properties of coronary KDR channels have not been studied as a possible mechanism for impaired coronary reserve in cardiac hypertrophy. The present... -
Relaxant Effect of 4-Aminopyridine on the Mesenteric Artery of Rat
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2000, Vol.4 No.6 4 455-461 (7 pages)
It has been well known that 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) has an excitatory effect on vascular smooth muscle due to causing membrane depolarization by blocking K-channel. However, we observed that 4-AP had an inhibitory effect on the mesenteric artery of rat. Therefore, we investigated the mechanism of 4-AP-induced vasorelaxation. The mesenteric arcuate artery and its branches were isolated and cut into ring. The ring segment was immersed in HEPES-buffered solution and its isometric tension was... -
Effect of Heat Shock Protein 72 on the Generation of Reperfusion Arrhythmias
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2000, Vol.4 No.4 7 319-324 (6 pages)
The causal relationship between heat shock protein (HSP) and second window of cardioprotective effect is still undetermined. In the present study, we assessed whether HSP-producing substances, amphetamine and ketamine, afforded protection against reperfusion-induced ventricular fibrillation (VF) and these protective effect remained after the inhibition of HSP72 production by quercetin, a mitochondrial ATPase inhibitor. Adult mongreal male cats (n=60, 2.5∼4 kg) were used in this study....
