Roles of Ca2+-Activated K+ Conductances on Spontaneous Firing Patterns of Isolated Rat Medial Vestibular Nucleus Neurons
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2000, Vol.4 No.1 1 1-8 (8 pages)
To investigate the contributions of intrinsic membrane properties to the spontaneous activity of medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) neurons, we assessed the effects of blocking large and small calcium-activated potassium channels by means of patch clamp recordings. Almost all the MVN neurons recorded in neonatal (P13∼P17) rat were shown to have either a single deep after-hyperpolarization (AHP; type A cells), or an early fast and a delayed slow AHP (type B cells). Among the recorded MVN cells,... -
Hemorrhage- and Restraint-induced Analgesia in Male and Female Conscious Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.6 3 555-563 (9 pages)
It is well known that stress induces analgesia. This study was designed to demonstrate the stress-induced analgesia by employing hemorrhage and restraint and to investigate its mechanism and sex difference. The degree of pain was assessed by measuring the magnitude of jaw opening reflex produced by a noxious electrical stimulation in the dental pulp and by measuring the latency to withdraw the tail from a heat ray. Restraint showed an antinociceptive response. A significant increase in pain... -
Different Mechanisms for K+-Induced Relaxation in Various Arteries
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 11 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.4 6 415-425 (11 pages)
[K]o can be increased under a variety of conditions including subarachnoid hemorrhage. The increase of [K]o in the range of 5∼15 mM may affect tensions of blood vessels and cause relaxation of agonist-induced precontracted vascular smooth muscle (K-induced relaxation). In this study, effect of the increase in extracellular K concentration on the agonist-induced contractions of various arteries including resistant arteries of rabbit was examined, using home-made... -
Reoxygenation Stimulates EDRF(s) Release from Endothelial Cells of Rabbit Aorta
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 12 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.4 4 393-404 (12 pages)
We have reported that hypoxia stimulates EDRF(s) release from endothelial cells and the release may be augmented by previous hypoxia. As a mechanism, it was hypothesized that reoxygenation can stimulate EDRF(s) release from endothelial cells and we tested the hypothesis via bioassay experiment. In the bioassay experiment, rabbit aorta with endothelium was used as EDRF donor vessel and rabbit carotid artery without endothelium as a bioassay test ring. The test ring was contracted by... -
Role of Ca2+ in the Stimulation of Glucose Transport by Insulin in Adipocytes
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.3 14 357-364 (8 pages)
We investigated the role of Ca2 and protein kinases/phosphatases in the stimulatory effect of insulin on glucose transport. In isolated rat adipocytes, the simple omission of CaCl2 from the incubation medium significantly reduced, but did not abolish, insulin-stimulated 2-deoxy glucose (2-DG) uptake. Pre-loading adipocytes with intracellular Ca2 chelator, 5,5'-dimethyl bis (o-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N'N' tetraacetic acetoxymethyl ester (5,5'-dimethyl BAPTA/AM) completely blocked... -
Thyroid Hormone-Induced Alterations of Ca2+-ATPase and Phospholamban Protein Expression in Cardiac Sarcoplasmic Reticulum
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.2 13 223-230 (8 pages)
Alterations of cardiovascular function associated with various thyroid states have been studied. In hyperthyroidism left ventricular contractility and relaxation velocity were increased, whereas these parameters were decreased in hypothyroidism. The mechanisms for these changes have been suggested to include alterations in the expression and/or activity levels of various proteins; α-myosin heavy chain, β- myosin heavy chain, β-receptors, the guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory protein, and... -
Effects of Dexamethasone and DHEA on the Changes of Glutamate and Polyamine Uptake in Rat Astrocytes by Lipopolysaccharide and Antimycin A
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.2 3 137-146 (10 pages)
Interactions among dexamethasone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and antimycin A on the glutamate uptake and the polyamine uptake were investigated in primary cultures of rat cerebral cortical astrocytes to examine the effects of dexamethasone and DHEA on the regulatory role of astrocytes in conditions of increased extracellular concentrations of glutamate or polyamines. 1. [3H]Glutamate uptake: LPS and antimycin A decreased Vmax, but both drugs had little effect on... -
Dopaminergic Inhibition of Dorsal Horn Cell Activity in the Cat
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.6 2 661-670 (10 pages)
Dopamine has been generally known to exert antinociceptive action in behavioral pain test, such as tail flick and hot plate test, but there appears to be a great variance in the reports on the antinociceptive effect of dopamine depending on the dosage and route of drug administration and type of animal preparation. In the present study, the effects of dopamine on the responses of wide dynamic range (WDR) cells to mechanical, thermal and graded electrical stimuli were investigated, and the... -
Dual Action of d-Tubocurarine on Large-Conductance Ca2+-activated K+ Channels from Rat Brain Reconstituted into Planar Lipid Bilayer
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 5 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.5 2 549-553 (5 pages)
Using the planar lipid bilayer method, we investigated the effect of d-tubocurarine (dTC) on the extracellular side of large-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channel from rat brain. When the initial open probability (Po) of the channel was relatively high, dTC decreased channel activity in a concentration dependent manner. In contrast, when the initial Po was lower, sub-micro molar dTC increased channel activity by destabilizing the closed states of the channel. Further addition of dTC up to micro... -
Effects of Exogenous ATP on Calcium Mobilization and Cell Proliferation in C6 Glioma Cell
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.4 3 419-425 (7 pages)
To clarify the effect of extracellular ATP in cultured C6 glioma cells, ATP-induced cytosolic free calcium ([Ca2]i) mobilization and cell proliferation were investigated. ATP-induced [Ca2]i increased in a dose-dependent manner (107 M∼103 M). ATP-induced [Ca2]i increases were slightly slowed in extracellular calcium-free conditions especially in sustained phase. ATP-induced [Ca2]i increment was also inhibited by the pretreatment of U73122, a...
