cortex layer IV - II/III pathways in the 6-week old saccharin-fed rats. There was no significant difference in LTP formation in the hippocampus between the control group and saccharin-treated group in both male and female rats. Also in the somatosensory cortex, we did not see a significant difference in LTP among the groups. Therefore, we conclude that saccharin-intake during 3∼6 weeks may not affect the development of physiological function of the cortical and hippocampal synapses in rats. -
Calcium Sensitization Induced by Sodium Fluoride in Permeabilized Rat Mesenteric Arteries

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2010, Vol.14 No.1 8 51-57 (7 pages)
It was hypothesized that NaF induces calcium sensitization in Ca2+-controlled solution in permeabilized rat mesenteric arteries. Rat mesenteric arteries were permeabilized with Ղ- escin and subjected to tension measurement. NaF potentiated the concentration-response curves to Ca2+ (decreased EC50 and increased Emax). Cumulative addition of NaF (4.0, 8.0 and 16 mM) also increased vascular tension in Ca2+-controlled solution at pCa 7.0 or pCa 6.5, but not at pCa 8.0. NaF-induced... -
Overexpression of AMPKα1 Ameliorates Fatty Liver in Hyperlipidemic Diabetic Rats

5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a heterotrimeric complex consisting of a catalytic (Ձ) and two regulatory (Ղ and Ճ) subunits. Two isoforms are known for catalytic subunit (Ձ1, Ձ2) and are encoded by different genes. To assess the metabolic effects of AMPKՁ1, we examined the effects of overexpression of adenoviral-mediated AMPKՁ1 in hyperlipidemic type 2 diabetic rats. The Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rat is an established animal... -
Altered Gene Expression in Cerulein-Stimulated Pancreatic Acinar Cells: Pathologic Mechanism of Acute Pancreatitis

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2009, Vol.13 No.6 1 409-416 (8 pages)
Acute pancreatitis is a multifactorial disease associated with the premature activation of digestive enzymes. The genes expressed in pancreatic acinar cells determine the severity of the disease. The present study determined the differentially expressed genes in pancreatic acinar cells treated with cerulein as an in vitro model of acute pancreatitis. Pancreatic acinar AR42J cells were stimulated with 10−8 M cerulein for 4 h, and genes with altered expression were identified using a cDNA... -
Ape1/Ref-1 Stimulates GDNF/GFRα1-mediated Downstream Signaling and Neuroblastoma Proliferation

We previously reported that glial cell line-derived neurotropic factor (GDNF) receptor Ձ1 (GFRՁ1) is a direct target of apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (Ape1/Ref-1). In the present study, we further analyzed the physiological roles of Ape1/Ref-1-induced GFRՁ1 expression in Neuro2a mouse neuroblastoma cells. Ape1/Ref-1 expression caused the clustering of GFRՁ1 immunoreactivity in lipid rafts in response to GDNF. We also found that Ret, a downstream target of... -
Kainic Acid-induced Neuronal Death is Attenuated by Aminoguanidine but Aggravated by L-NAME in Mouse Hippocampus

Nitric oxide (NO) has both neuroprotective and neurotoxic effects depending on its concentration and the experimental model. We tested the effects of NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), a nonselective nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, and aminoguanidine, a selective inducible NOS (iNOS) inhibitor, on kainic acid (KA)-induced seizures and hippocampal CA3 neuronal death. L-NAME (50 mg/kg, i.p.) and/or aminoguanidine (200 mg/kg, i.p.) were administered 1 h prior to the... -
Bis Is Involved in Glial Differentiation of P19 Cells Induced by Retinoic Acid

Previous observations suggest that Bis, a Bcl-2-binding protein, may play a role the neuronal and glial differentiation in vivo. To examine this further, we investigated Bis expression during the in vitro differentiation of P19 embryonic carcinoma cells induced by retinoic acid (RA). Western blotting and RT-PCR assays showed that Bis expression was temporarily decreased during the free floating stage and then began to increase on day 6 after the induction of differentiation. Double... -
Extracellular Signal-regulated Kinase Activation Is Required for Serine 727 Phosphorylation of STAT3 in Schwann Cells in vitro and in vivo
HyunKyoungLee, JunyangJung, SangHwaLee, Su-YeongSeo, DukJoonSuh, HwanTaePark 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2009, Vol.13 No.3 4 161-168 (8 pages)
In the peripheral nerves, injury-induced cytokines and growth factors perform critical functions in the activation of both the MEK/ERK and JAK/STAT3 pathways. In this study, we determined that nerve injury-induced ERK activation was temporally correlated with STAT3 phosphorylation at the serine 727 residue. In cultured Schwann cells, we noted that ERK activation is required for the serine phosphorylation of STAT3 by neuropoietic cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6). Serine phosphorylated STAT3 by IL-6... -
Role of Dopamine Receptors on Electroencephalographic Changes Produced by Repetitive Apomorphine Treatments in Rats

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2009, Vol.13 No.3 2 147-151 (5 pages)
Repeated psychostimulants induce electroencephalographic (EEG) changes, which reflect adaptation of the neural substrate related to dopaminergic pathways. To study the role of dopamine receptors in EEG changes, we examined the effect of apomorphine, the dopamine D1 receptor antagonist, SCH-23390, and the D2 receptor antagonist, haloperidol, on EEG in rats. For single and repeated apomorphine treatment groups, the rats received saline or apomorphine for 4 days followed by a 3-day withdrawal...
