The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.4 2 173-180 (8 pages)
Microglial activation is thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of many brain disorders. Therefore, understanding the response of microglia to noxious stimuli may provide insights into their role in disorders such as stroke and neurodegeneration. Many genes involved in this response have been identified individually, but not systematically. In this regards, the microarray system permitted to screen a large number of genes in biological or pathological processes. Therefore, we used microarray... -
Effects of Phosphodiesterase 5 Inhibition with Sildenafil on Atrial Contractile and Secretory Function

Selective inhibition of phosphodiesterase (PDE) 5 opened a new therapeutic approach for cardiovascular disorders. Therefore, the effect of PDE5 inhibition on the cardiac function should thoroughly be defined. The purpose of the present study was to define the effects of sildenafil, a selective inhibitor of PDE5, on the atrial cGMP efflux, atrial dynamics, and the release of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). By perfusing rabbit left atria to allow atrial pacing, changes in atrial stroke volume... -

with E was significantly reduced 72 hour after OGD compared to that of non-treated slices (p<0.05). E pretreatment also increased the expression of pAkt 72 hour after OGD compared to that of no treatment (p<0.01). These data suggest that estrogen pretreatment may rescue neurons from ischemic insults through the activation of Akt and also indicate that our model would be a useful alternative method to study the mechanisms and effects of estrogen replacement treatment for neuroprotection. -
Lysophosphatidylcholine Attenuates Endothelium-dependent Relaxation Responses through Inhibition of ACh-induced Endothelial [Ca2+]i Increase

in endothelium denuded artery. In Ca2-free external solution, ACh transiently increased [Ca2]i, and pretreatment of LPC significantly inhibited ACh-induced transient [Ca2]i change. Based on the above results, it may be concluded that LPC inhibits the ACh-induced [Ca2]i change through inhibition of Ca2 mobilization in vascular endothelial cells, resulting in decreased production of NO and concomitant inhibition of endothelium- dependent vascular relaxation. -
Characterization of ETB Receptor-mediated Relaxation in Precontracted Mesenteric Artery from Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.5 8 305-313 (9 pages)
Diabetes mellitus is associated with vascular complications, including an impairment of vascular function and alterations in the reactivity of blood vessels to vasoactive substances in various vasculature. In the present study, the authors have observed endothelin-B (ETB) receptor agonist-induced relaxation in precontracted mesenteric arterial segments from streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats, which was not shown from control rats or in other arterial segments from diabetic rats.... -
Naltrexone Inhibits Catecholamine Secretion Evoked by Nicotinic Receptor Stimulation in the Perfused Rat Adrenal Medulla

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.4 6 223-230 (8 pages)
The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of naltrexone, an opioid antagonist, on secretion of catecholamines (CA) evoked by cholinergic nicotinic stimulation and membrane-depolarization from the isolated perfused rat adrenal gland and to establish the mechanism of its action. Naltrexone (3⁓106 M) perfused into an adrenal vein for 60 min produced time-dependent inhibition in CA secretory responses evoked by ACh (5.32⁓103 M), high K... -
Androgen Hormone Inhibits Expression of iNOS and COX-2 Protein in Rat Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.4 5 215-222 (8 pages)
We investigated the effects of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone on inflammatory response of iNOS and COX-2 expression in rat vascular smooth muscle cells. Rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) stimulated with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 10μg/ml) for 24 hours were incubated with increasing amounts of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (1 and 100 nM). LPS was found to induce inflammatory response of iNOS and COX-2 mRNA and protein in VSMC. These processes were affected by male sex... -
Protein Kinase C Activates ATP-sensitive Potassium Channels in Rabbit Ventricular Myocytes
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.4 1 187-194 (8 pages)
Several signal transduction pathways have been implicated in ischemic preconditioning induced by the activation of ATP-sensitive K (KATP) channels. We examined whether protein kinase C (PKC) modulated the activity of KATP channels by recording KATP channel currents in rabbit ventricular myocytes using patch-clamp technique and found that phorbol 12,13-didecanoate (PDD) enhanced pinacidil-induced KATP channel activity in the cell-attached configuration; and this effect was prevented by... -

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.3 2 143-148 (6 pages)
Following peripheral nerve injury, excessive nociceptive inputs result in diverse physiological alterations in the spinal cord substantia gelatinosa (SG), lamina II of the dorsal horn. Here, I report the alterations of excitatory or inhibitory transmission in the SG of a rat model for neuropathic pain ("spared nerve injury"). Results from whole-cell recordings of SG neurons show that the number of distinct primary afferent fibers, identified by graded intensity of stimulation, is...
