Catalytic hydrogenation-assisted preparation of melt spinnable pitches from petroleum residue for making mesophase pitch based carbon fibers
Dong Hun Lee, Jisu Choi, Young Se Oh, Yoong Ahm Kim, Kap Seung Yang, Ho Jin Ryu, Yong Jung Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.24 4 28-35 (8 pages)
We demonstrated an effective way of preparing melt spinnable mesophase pitches via catalytic hydrogenation of petroleum residue (fluidized catalytic cracking-decant oil) and their subsequent thermal soaking. The mesophase pitches thus obtained were analyzed in terms of their viscosity, elemental composition, solubility, molecular weight, softening point and optical texture. We found that zeolite-induced catalytic hydrogenation under high hydrogen pressure contributed to a large variation in the... -
Adsorption characteristics of heavy metals ions by physical activation on coal tar pitch-based activated carbon fibers
Bo-kyung Choi, Jae-Kyoung Ko, Soo-Jin Park, Min-Kang Seo 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.22 10 96-100 (5 pages)
Due to the increasing population growth of modern society, along with rapid industrial development and urbanization, environmental pollution continues to worsen and has become an important issue, not only domestically but also worldwide. In particular, toxic substances such as heavy metal ions are present in the wastewater produced by various industries. This wastewater flows into rivers, pollutes water supplies, and can contaminate the drinking water supplied to people [1-3]. Powder or... -
The effect of the spinning conditions on the structure of mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers by Taguchi method

a reduced winding speed, and an increased extrusion pressure. The winding speed was found to be the most significant factor in relation to the fiber diameter. While it was observed that thicker carbon fiber generally shows improved preferred orientation, the most important variable affecting the preferred orientation was found to be the entry angle. As the entry angle decreased from 120° to 60°, the shear flow was enhanced to induce more ordered radial alignment of crystallite planes so as to... -
Pitch-based carbon fibers from coal tar or petroleum residue under the same processing condition

evaluated by elemental analysis, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS), and so on. Spinnable pitches were prepared for melt-spinning carbon fiber through a simple distillation under strong nitrogen flow, and further vacuum distillation to obtain a high softening point. Carbon fibers were produced from the above pitches by single-hole melt spinning and additional heat treatment, for oxidization and... -
Preparation and characterization of carbon fiber-reinforced thermosetting composites: a review
Fan-Long Jin, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 11 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.2 1 67-77 (11 pages)
Carbon fibers (CFs) have a unique combination of properties which allow them to be widely used as reinforcing materials in advanced polymer composites. The mechanical properties of CF-reinforced polymer composites are governed mainly by the quality of interfacial adhesion between the CFs and the polymer matrix. Surface treatments of CFs are generally carried out to introduce chemical functional groups on the fiber surfaces, which provide the ability to control the surface characteristics of CFs.... -
Modification of isotropic coal-tar pitch by acid treatments for carbon fiber melt-spinning
Mi Jung Yoo, Hyo Jun Ko, Yun-Soo Lim and Myung-Soo Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.4 3 247-254 (8 pages)
In this work, thermal treatment accompanied with different acid treatments was applied to a commercial coal tar pitch (CTP) to obtain a spinnable precursor pitch for carbon fiber. In the case of thermal treatment only, a relatively high reaction temperature of between 380°C and 400°C was required to obtain a softening point (SP) range of 220°C-260°C and many meso-phase particles were created during the application of high reaction temperature. When nitric acid or sulfuric acid treatment was... -
My life and carbon
peter A. Thrower 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.2 1 1-5 (5 pages)
My introduction to carbon science was unplanned and unexpected. After I received my B.A. in physics from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 1960, I agreed to take an appointment at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Harwell, UK. Starting September 1, I was to work on a project studying focused collision sequences in metals. For personal reasons, I was not able to report until a month later, when I was informed that my original...
