β-irradiation (Ho patch)-induced skin injury in mini-pigs: effects on NF-κB and COX-2 expression in the skin
Joong-Sun Kim, Kyung-Jin Rhim, Won-Seok Jang, Sun-Joo Lee, Yeonghoon Son, Seung-Sook Lee, Sunhoo Park, Sang Moo Lim 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 9 Pages

In the present study, the detrimental effect of β-emission on pig skin was evaluated. Skin injury was modeled in mini-pigs by exposing the animals to 50 and 100 Gy of β-emission delivered by Ho patches. Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical changes in exposed skin were monitored for 18 weeks after β-irradiation. Radiation induced desquamation at 2∼4 weeks and gradual repair of this damage was evident 6 weeks after irradiation. Changes in basal cell density... -
Laparoscopic left hepatectomy in swine: a safe and feasible technique

9 min. No significant perioperative complications were observed. The average weight of each resected lobe was 180 ± 51 g. Complete blood count as well as serum organics and enzyme levels normalized after about 2 weeks. During necropsy, adhesion of the hepatic raw surface to the gastric wall and omentum were observed. No other abnormalities were identified. This minimally invasive left hepatectomy technique in swine could serve as a useful model for investigating liver diseases and regeneration,... -
Equine hyperimmune serum protects mice against Clostridium difficile spore challenge

B as well as whole-cell bacteria. The toxin-neutralizing activities of the antibodies were evaluated in vitro and the prophylactic effects of in vivo passive immunotherapy were demonstrated using a conventional mouse model. The data demonstrated that immunized horses generated antibodies against both toxins A and B that possessed toxin-neutralizing activity. Additionally, mice treated with the antiserum lost less weight without any sign of illness and regained weight back to a normal range more... -
Recombinant Kluyveromyces lactis expressing highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus GP5 elicits mucosal and cell-mediated immune responses in mice

to this construct were analyzed in mice. Intestinal mucosal PRRSV-specific sIgA antibody and higher levels of IFN-γ in spleen CD4 and CD8 T cells were induced by oral administration of Yeast-GP5. Additionally, Yeast-GP5 administered subcutaneously evoked vigorous cell-mediated immunity, and PRRSV-specific lymphocyte proliferation and IFN-γ secretion were detected in the splenocytes of mice. These results suggest that Yeast-GP5 has the potential for use as a vaccine for PRRSV in the future. -
Gossypol acetic acid induces apoptosis in RAW264.7 cells via a caspase-dependent mitochondrial signaling pathway
Sijun Deng, Hui Yuan, Jine Yi, Yin Lu, Qiang Wei, Chengzhi Guo, Jing Wu, Liyun Yuan, Zuping He 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 9 Pages
대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 2013, 제 14권 제 3호 7 281-289 (9 pages)
To investigate the effects of gossypol acetic acid (GA) on proliferation and apoptosis of the macrophage cell line RAW264.7 and further understand the possible underlying mechanism responsible for GA-induced cell apoptosis, RAW264.7 cells were treated with GA (25∼35 μmol/L) for 24 h and the cytotoxicity was determined by MTT assay, while apoptotic cells were identified by TUNEL assay, acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining and flow cytometry. Moreover, mitochondrial membrane potential... -
Elm tree bark extract inhibits HepG2 hepatic cancer cell growth via pro-apoptotic activity

the growth of HepG2 cells and induced apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. Pro-apoptotic activity was promoted via the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis, as demonstrated by the activation of pro-apoptotic proteins Bax, caspase-9, caspase-3, and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase as well as the down-regulation of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. These results suggest that BEE may have potential use in hepatic cancer chemoprevention by suppressing cancer cell growth via pro-apoptotic activity. -
Prior Ischemic Treatment Renders Kidney Resistant to Subsequent Ischemia

a marker of leukocyte infiltration. There is, however, no the post-ischemic increase of MPO activity in kidneys previously subjected to ischemia. Post-ischemic expression of tissue intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is greater in the kidney previously sham-operated than in the kidneys previously subjected to ischemia. In conclusion, prior ischemia protects kidney function and morphology against subsequent ischemia 8 days later. The resistance is associated with the reduced post-ischemic... -
Tricyclic antidepressant amitriptyline inhibits 5-hydroxytryptamine 3 receptor currents in NCB-20 cells

tricyclic antidepressant, is commonly used to treat depression and neuropathic pain, but its mechanism is still unclear. We tested the effect of amitriptyline on 5-hydroxytryptamine 3 (5-HT3) receptor currents and studied its blocking mechanism because the clinical applications of amitriptyline overlapped with 5-HT3 receptor therapeutic potentials. Using a whole-cell voltage clamp method, we recorded the currents of the 5-HT3 receptor when 5-HT was applied alone or co-applied with amitriptyline... -
Human umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells engineered to overexpress growth factors accelerate outcomes in hair growth

the hair growth-promoting effects of hUCB-MSCs treatment to determine whether hUCB-MSCs enhance the promotion of hair growth. Furthermore, we attempted to identify the factors responsible for hair growth. The effects of hUCB-MSCs on hair growth were investigated in vivo, and hUCB-MSCs advanced anagen onset and hair follicle neogeneration. We found that hUCB-MSCs coculture increased the viability and up-regulated hair induction-related proteins of human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) in vitro. A...
