Participation of COX-1 and COX-2 in the contractile effect of phenylephrine in prepubescent and old rats
GustavoGuevara-Balcazar, IsraelRamirez-Sanchez, ElviaMera-Jimenez, IvanRubio-Gayosso, MariaEugeniaAguilar-Najera, MariaC.Castillo-Her 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages

Vascular reactivity can be influenced by the vascular region, animal age, and pathologies present. Prostaglandins (produced by COX-1 and COX-2) play an important role in the contractile response to phenylephrine in the abdominal aorta of young rats. Although these COXs are found in many tissues, their distribution and role in vascular reactivity are not clear. At a vascular level, they take part in the homeostasis functions involved in many physiological and pathologic processes (e.g., arterial... -
MDL-12330A potentiates TRAIL-induced apoptosis in gastric cancer cells through CHOP-mediated DR5 upregulation
Sung-ChulLimSongIyHan 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2017, Vol.21 No.4 5 397-405 (9 pages)
MDL-12330A is a widely used adenylyl cyclase (AC) inhibitor that blocks AC/cAMP signaling. In this study, we demonstrated a novel antitumor activity of this drug in gastric carcinoma (GC) cell lines. In these GC cells, MDL-12330A reduced cell viability and induced cell death in a concentration-dependent manner. At a moderate concentration (~20 μM), MDL-12330A mainly induced apoptotic death whereas at concentrations greater than 20 μM, it increased non-apoptotic cell death. The induction of... -
Elucidation of the profound antagonism of contractile action of phenylephrine in rat aorta effected by an atypical sympathomimetic decongestant

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2017, Vol.21 No.4 4 385-395 (11 pages)
Vasoconstrictive properties of sympathomimetic drugs are the basis of their widespread use as decongestants and possible source of adverse responses. Insufficiently substantiated practice of combining decongestants in some marketed preparations, such are those containing phenylephrine and lerimazoline, may affect the overall contractile activity, and thus their therapeutic utility. This study aimed to examine the interaction between lerimazoline and phenylephrine in isolated rat aortic rings,... -
Protein kinase C beta II upregulates intercellular adhesion molecule-1 via mitochondrial activation in cultured endothelial cells
HeeKyoungJoo, YuRanLee, SungaChoi, MyoungSooPark, GunKang, Cuk-SeongKim, ByeongHwaJeon 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages

Activation of protein kinase C (PKC) is closely linked with endothelial dysfunction. However, the effect of PKCβII on endothelial dysfunction has not been characterized in cultured endothelial cells. Here, using adenoviral PKCβII gene transfer and pharmacological inhibitors, the role of PKCβII on endothelial dysfucntion was investigated in cultured endothelial cells. Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), p66shc phosphorylation, intracellular adhesion... -
Reactive oxygen species increase neuronal excitability via activation of nonspecific cation channel in rat medullary dorsal horn neurons

The caudal subnucleus of the spinal trigeminal nucleus (medullary dorsal horn; MDH) receives direct inputs from small diameter primary afferent fibers that predominantly transmit nociceptive information in the orofacial region. Recent studies indicate that reactive oxygen species (ROS) is involved in persistent pain, primarily through spinal mechanisms. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of xanthine/xanthine oxidase (X/XO) system, a known generator of superoxide anion (O2·-), on... -
Effects of tianeptine on symptoms of fibromyalgia via BDNF signaling in a fibromyalgia animal model

response element-binding protein (p-CREB), western blotting and immunohistochemistry analyses were performed. In behavioral analysis, nociception tests showed that pain threshold was significantly decreased in the FM group compared to that in the control group. Western blot and immunohistochemical analyses of medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and hippocampus showed downregulation of BDNF and p-CREB proteins in the FM group compared to the control group. However, tianeptine recovered these changes... -
Expression profile of mitochondrial voltage-dependent anion channel-1 (VDAC1) influenced genes is associated with pulmonary hypertension
TongZhou, HaiyangTang, YingHan, DustinFraidenburg, Young-WonKim, DongheeLee, JeongyoonChoi, HyoweonBang, Jae-HongKo 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2017, Vol.21 No.3 10 353-360 (8 pages)
Several human diseases have been associated with mitochondrial voltage-dependent anion channel-1 (VDAC1) due to its role in calcium ion transportation and apoptosis. Recent studies suggest that VDAC1 may interact with endothelium-dependent nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). Decreased VDAC1 expression may limit the physical interaction between VDAC1 and eNOS and thus impair nitric oxide production, leading to cardiovascular diseases, including pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). In this report, we... -
JS-III-49, a hydroquinone derivative, exerts anti-inflammatory activity by targeting Akt and p38
Young-SuYi, Mi-YeonKim, JaeYoulCho 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2017, Vol.21 No.3 9 345-352 (8 pages)
Since previous studies have reported that hydroquinone (HQ) exerted immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory activity, various HQ derivatives have been synthesized and their biological activities investigated. In this study, we explored the anti-inflammatory activity of JS-III-49, a novel HQ derivative, in macrophagemediated inflammatory responses. JS-III-49 suppressed the production of the inflammatory mediators nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and downregulated the mRNA expression... -

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin condition accompanied by symptoms such as edema and hemorrhage. Kimchi is a traditional fermented Korean dish consisting of various probiotics. In this study, the therapeutic effect of Lactobacillus plantarum CJLP55 isolated from Kimchi was studied in AD-induced mice. Orally administered Lactobacillus strain, CJLP55, suppressed AD symptoms and high serum IgE levels. CJLP55 administration reduced the thickness of the epidermis, infiltration of mast... -

Epidemiologic interest in particulate matter (PM) is growing particularly because of its impact of respiratory health. It has been elucidated that PM evoked inflammatory signal in pulmonary epithelia. However, it has not been established Ca2+ signaling mechanisms involved in acute PM-derived signaling in pulmonary fibroblasts. In the present study, we explored dust particles PM modulated intracellular Ca2+ signaling and sought to provide a therapeutic strategy by antagonizing PM-induced...
