Carolyn Victoria Uy Ronquillo, Maria Perlita E. de Leon 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.3 4 59-79 (21 pages)
This research was conducted at a progressive laboratory preschool of a national university in the Philippines. It examined paternal participation through the fathers’ attendance in seven school-wide events and an in-depth interview. It aimed to set apart school activities which, fathers prefer / less prefer to attend and identified variables that influence paternal participation. From the pool of 134 fathers who participated in the study, those with high and low attendance were identified and... -

Jinyoung Kim, Seung Yeon Lee, Suhyun Kwon, Seonmi Park 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 17 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.3 3 41-57 (17 pages)
of musical knowledge. The results showed significant differences between pre-service teachers’ perceived knowledge and their actual level of understanding. The gap between self-perceptions and actual level of understandings of musical knowledge was not significantly different among the groups of participants with different periods of musical training except for timbre and dynamics. The results of this study were discussed in terms of what early childhood pre-service teachers still need, and how... -

“Raising a Socially Competent Child”: Unpacking the Concept of Social Competence
Eunae Son 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 6 93-114 (22 pages)
This paper investigates how social competence, as a discourse, has been constructed in the field of early childhood education (hereafter ‘the field’) and how the conceptualization of social competence in academia has been applied to educational practices. Based on Bruner’s (1996) notions of folk psychology and folk pedagogy and Foucault’s notion of discourse (Foucault, 1972), I identify the cultural values and beliefs in the dominant discourses about raising “a socially competent child”,... -

Marilyn Fleer, Marie Hammer, Sue March 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 4 47-67 (21 pages)
The telling of fairytales has been a longstanding practice within the field of early childhood education in many communities across the Asia Pacific region. But what do we know about how educators use fairytales for the development of emotions for preschool aged children? In drawing upon culturalhistorical theory (Vygotsky, 1971, 1987, 1999), this paper presents the findings of a study into how fairytales were introduced to preschool aged children (n=30; from 3.3 to 5.3 years with mean age 4.2... -

Carolina Cabezas, Elizabeth Rouse 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.1 4 57-78 (22 pages)
In Australia, over one third of all children in Early Childhood programs speak a first language other than English. Despite considerable work into teachers’ beliefs on cultural diversity, attention to aspects of second language acquisition in the Early Years has been limited within the Early Childhood field. This paper reports on a small study investigating how four early childhood educators understand theory of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and bilingualism, and how they cater for... -
Early Childhood Administrators’ Admission Decision Making Process in Including Children with Special Needs in Singapore
Chen-Chen Cheng 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.1 3 37-56 (20 pages)
In Singapore, many parents find it difficult to locate early childhood services for their children with special needs. As Singapore does not have laws protecting the right to education for children with special needs, early childhood center administrators (managers and principals) make admission decisions at their own discretion on a case-by-case basis. This qualitative interview study examines the individual, varied patterns of early childhood center administrators’ admission decision making... -

shift towards the increased use of formal early childhood education and care services. Federal, state and territory policy makers have responded with reform agendas designed to improve the quality of early childhood education and care. There are few studies that provide insights into community perceptions of current initiatives in early childhood education policy and their perceived effectiveness with families. This study begins to address this void by examining the perceptions of the community... -

was witnessed. Results showed 1st and 4th-year student- and diploma-qualified teachers perceived acts of physical bullying to be more serious than verbal or relational bullying to a greater extent than did degree-qualified teachers. Degree-qualified teachers were less susceptible to bullying type and indicated they would be more likely to intervene than the other three groups. Results are discussed in relation to their implication for teaching practice and the content of pre-service education. -

Infant behaviours in this context were analysed in relation to child characteristics, such as gender, temperament, and birth order, and also in relation to the infant’s home book-reading environment (i.e., frequency of parental book reading and parental attitudes toward books). Gender differences were found in infants’ looking behaviours in the Bookstart programme context. When infant gender, birth order, and parents’ familiarity with the...
