Rethinking Story Reading in U.S. Preschools: Making Story Comprehension and Social-Emotional Understanding the Priority
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 2 5-25 (21 pages)
in story reading, one emphasizing story comprehension directly, not as a vehicle for developing only oral vocabulary and print-related literacy skills. This backdrop, as well as discussions of new research and achievement difficulties in school-age children, sets the stage for the author’s suggestion that preschoolers’ social-emotional understanding would also likely benefit, if story reading goals and strategies were changed to focus on higher-level story comprehension. Examples of suitable... -
Guest Editor’s INTRODUCTION
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 4 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 1 1-4 (4 pages)
There are several reasons for our choice of the topic of “pedagogies of social emotional development” as the theme for this guest-edited issue of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Research in Early Childhood Education. From its beginnings, early childhood education emphasized children’s social emotional development. This was true both for the nursery and play schools attended by children of the wealthy and the settlement house preschool programs intended to give children of immigrants and the poor... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages

on leadership roles. One of the reasons for this willingness to take on leadership roles included the belief that as a result of working as a teacher for many years, they were now ready to impart their knowledge to early childhood educators in the industry. Factors identified which hindered respondents from willingness to take on leadership roles included lack of leadership opportunities in their centres, lack of clear job scope for leadership positions, new ideas were not accepted or valued and... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.1 4 57-78 (22 pages)
In Australia, over one third of all children in Early Childhood programs speak a first language other than English. Despite considerable work into teachers’ beliefs on cultural diversity, attention to aspects of second language acquisition in the Early Years has been limited within the Early Childhood field. This paper reports on a small study investigating how four early childhood educators understand theory of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and bilingualism, and how they cater for... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2013, Vol.7 No.3 4 69-101 (33 pages)
This study examined how pre- and post-service early childhood teachers’ beliefs and responses to bullying among young children differ by level of qualification, type of bullying and whether or not it was witnessed. Results showed 1st and 4th-year student- and diploma-qualified teachers perceived acts of physical bullying to be more serious than verbal or relational bullying to a greater extent than did degree-qualified teachers. Degree-qualified teachers were less susceptible to bullying type... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2013, Vol.7 No.2 5 63-83 (21 pages)
This article provides case data that illustrate the potential of the emergent writing/drawing context for supporting oral language, content knowledge, and reasoning in preschoolers. The adult-child talk surrounding the samples provided are discussed in relation to the child’s prior experiences and knowledge, and circumstances in the classroom that affect a teacher’s time allocation. A current trend in using preschool writing centers in U.S. classrooms to focus quite narrowly on supporting... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2011, Vol.5 No.2 6 107-123 (17 pages)
This paper explores the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) approach to curriculum policy in early childhood education. The Kindergarten Curriculum Guideline contains few directives or practical suggestions for teachers. The abstractness and indirectness of the MEXT approach to establishing curricular guidelines stands in stark contrast to the much more explicit and directive curriculum guidelines for early childhood education found in China, the US,... -
