Sensitivity of Rabbit Cerebral Artery to Serotonin is Increased with the Moderate Increase of Extracellular K+

[K]O can be increased under a variety of conditions including subarachnoid hemorrhage. The increase of [K]O in the range of 5∼15 mM may affect tensions of blood vessels and can change their sensitivity to various vasoactive substances. Therefore, it was examined in the present study whether the sensitivity of cerebral arteries to vasoactive substances can be changed with the moderate increase of [K]O, using Mulvany-type myograph and [Ca2]c measurement. The... -
Role of Phospholipase A2 in Oxidant-induced Alteration in Phosphate Transport in Primary Cultured Rabbit Renal Proximal Tubule Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.5 8 601-609 (9 pages)
The present study was undertaken to examine the role of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) in oxidant-induced inhibition of phosphate transport in primary cultured rabbit renal proximal tubule cells. Uptakes of phosphate and glucose were dose-dependently inhibited by an oxidant t-butylhydroperoxide (tBHP), and the significant inhibition appeared at 0.025 mM of tBHP, whereas tBHP-induced alterations in lipid peroxidation and cell viability were seen at 0.5 mM. tBHP stimulated arachidonic acid (AA) release... -
The Effects of Aging and Atherosclerosis on Elastin of Human Aortas; Quantitative Analysis of Elastin-Content and SEM Analysis of Elastolysis

lamina (IEL) and tunica media (TM) with SEM (scanning electron microscopy), and discovered that the IEL shows various forms of elastolysis- broken sheets, discontinuity, various sizes of lumps, vesicles, and possible newly formed elastin in the aortic lesions (Song and Roach submitted to YMJ). From these studies we conclude that elastin in the aortic wall remains well balanced quantitatively with age in spite of evidence suggesting vigorous degeneration and regeneration in the atherosclerotic... -
Acute Cyclosporin A-Treatment Impairs the Cytosolic Guanylate Cyclase-Mediated Vasodilatation in Rat Thoracic Aorta
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.4 9 471-477 (7 pages)
Cyclosporin A (CsA), a widely used immunosuppressant, is well known to cause nephrotoxicity and hypertension as major side effects. The present study was aimed at investigating the effects of CsA-pretreatment on the activities of cytosolic guanylate cyclase (cGC) in relation to the alteration of relaxant responses in the rat thoracic aorta. CsA (10 ㄍM)-preincubation for 90 min significantly attenuated the vasodilatation induced by sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a cytosolic guanylate cyclase... -
Effects of Prostaglandin E2 on the Spontaneous Contractions and Electrical Activities of the Antral Circular Muscle in Guinea-pig Stomach
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.3 11 361-368 (8 pages)
The spontaneous contractions of gastric smooth muscles are regulated by slow waves, which are modulated by both nervous system and humoral agents. This study was designed to examine the effects of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) on the contractile and electrical activities of antral smooth muscles in guinea-pig stomach, using an intracellular recording technique. To elucidate the underlying mechanism for its effect on contractility, ionic currents were also measured using a whole-cell patch clamp... -
Cardioprotective Effects of Low Dose Bacterial Lipopolysaccharide May Not Be Directly Associated with Prostacyclin Production
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 13 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.3 8 331-343 (13 pages)
Sublethal dose of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) would induce protection against cardiac ischemic/ reperfusion (I/R) injury. This study examines the following areas: 1) the temporal induction of the cardioprotection produced by LPS; and 2) the relations between a degree of protection and the myocardial prostacyclin (PGI2) production. Rats were administered LPS (2 mg/kg, i.v.), and hearts were removed 1, 4, 8, 14, 24, 48, 72,and 96 h later. Using Langendorff apparatus, haemodynamic... -
Modulation of Outward Potassium Currents by Nitric Oxide in Longitudinal Smooth Muscle Cells of Guinea-pig Ileum
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.2 11 225-232 (8 pages)
To investigate the possible involvement of outward potassium (K+) currents in nitric oxide-induced relaxation in intestinal smooth muscle, we used whole-cell patch clamp technique in freshly dispersed guinea-pig ileum longitudinal smooth muscle cells. When cells were held at 60 mV and depolarized from 40 mV to 50 mV in 10 mV increments, sustained outward K+ currents were evoked. The outward K+ currents were markedly increased by the addition of 10 ㄍM sodium... -
Electrolysis of Physiological Salt Solution Generates a Factor that Relaxes Vascular Smooth Muscle
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.2 10 217-223 (7 pages)
Oxygen-derived free radicals have been implicated in many important functions in the biological system. Electrical field stimulation (EFS) causes arterial relaxation in animal models. We found that EFS applied to neither muscle nor nerve but to Krebs solution caused a relaxation of rat aorta that had been contracted with phenylephrine. In the present study, therefore, we investigated the characteristics of this EIRF (electrolysis-induced relaxing factor) using rat isolated aorta. Results... -
