The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.6 12 631-640 (10 pages)
The present study investigated the stimulatory effects of iron (or ascorbate) on cyclosporine-induced kidney mitochondrial damage. Damaging effect of 50 μM cyclosporine plus 20 μM Fe2 on mitochondrial lipids and proteins of rat kidney and hyaluronic acid was greater than the summation of oxidizing action of each compound alone, except sulfhydryl oxidation. Cyclosporine and 100 μM ascorbate showed an enhanced damaging effect on lipids but not on proteins. The peroxidative action of... -

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.6 2 547-554 (8 pages)
The aim of the present study is to investigate the contribution of Ca2-activated K (KCa) channels and delayed rectifier K (KV) channels to the resting membrane potential (RMP) in rabbit middle cerebral arterial smooth muscle cells. The RMP and membrane currents were recorded using the whole-cell patch configuration and single KCa channel was recorded using the outside-out patch configuration. Using the pipette solution containing 0.05 mM EGTA, the RMP was... -
Effects of Dexamethasone and DHEA on the Changes of Glutamate and Polyamine Uptake in Rat Astrocytes by Lipopolysaccharide and Antimycin A
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.2 3 137-146 (10 pages)
Interactions among dexamethasone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and antimycin A on the glutamate uptake and the polyamine uptake were investigated in primary cultures of rat cerebral cortical astrocytes to examine the effects of dexamethasone and DHEA on the regulatory role of astrocytes in conditions of increased extracellular concentrations of glutamate or polyamines. 1. [3H]Glutamate uptake: LPS and antimycin A decreased Vmax, but both drugs had little effect on... -
Properties of Spontaneous Activity in Gastric Smooth Muscle
H.Suzuki, Y.Yamamoto, G.D.S.Hirst 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.2 1 119-125 (7 pages)
Mammalian gastric smooth muscles generate spontaneous rhythmic contractions which are associated with slow oscillatory potentials (slow waves) and spike potentials. Spike potentials are blocked by organic Ca2-antagonists, indicating that these result from the activation of L-type Ca2-channel. However, the cellular mechanisms underlying the generation of slow wave remain unclear. Slow waves are insensitive to Ca2-antagonists but are blocked by metabolic inhibitors or low... -
The Effects of Sera from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients on Neuromuscular Transmission and Calcium Channels in Mice
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 17 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.1 13 101-117 (17 pages)
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a degenerative neuromuscular disease of unknown etiology in which the upper and lower motor neurons are progressively destroyed. Recent evidences support the role of autoimmune mechanisms in the pathogenesis of ALS. This study investigated the effects of sera from ALS patients on neuromuscular transmission in phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm preparations and on calcium currents of single isolated dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cells in mice. Mice were injected with... -

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.1 12 93-100 (8 pages)
The present study was designed to assess the roles of PLA2 activation and arachidonic acid (AA) metabolites in hypoxia-induced renal cell injury. Hypoxia increased LDH release in a dose-dependent manner in rabbit renal cortical slices, and this increase was significant after 20-min hypoxia. The hypoxia-induced LDH release was prevented by amino acids, glycine and alanine, and extracellular acidosis (pH 6.0). Buffering intracellular Ca2 by a chelator, but not omission of Ca2 in the... -

Both direct and indirect environmental stress to brain were increase the expression of transcription factor c-fos in various populations of neurons. In this study, we examined whether the intraperitoneal injections of lidocaine at doses inducing convulsion within 10 min increased the level of c-fos mRNA and protein in forebrain areas. In situ hybridization using [35S]UTP-labeled antisense c-fos, cRNA increased c-fos mRNA levels though hippocampal formation, piriform cortex, septum,... -

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 11 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.1 5 35-45 (11 pages)
Excitatory amino acid (EAA) and substance P (SP) have been known to be primary candidates for nociceptive neurotransmitter in the spinal cord, and calcium ions are implicated in processing of the sensory informations mediated by EAA and SP in the spinal cord. In this study, we examined how Ca2 modified the responses of dorsal horn neurons to single or combined iontophoretical application of EAA and SP in the rat. All the LT cells tested responded to kainate, whereas about 55% of low... -
