Gait is a new biometric aimed to recognize a subject by the manner in which they walk. Gait has several advantages over other biometrics, most notably that it is a non-invasive and perceivable at a distance when other biometrics are obscured. We present a new area based metric, called gait masks, which provides statistical data intimately related to the gait of the subject. Early results are promising with a recognition rate of 90% on a small database of human subjects. In addition to this, we... -
Young Children’s Racial-Cultural Identity Negotiation and Development:A Phenomenological Case Study
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 24 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.2 5 97-120 (24 pages)
This article reports on a phenomenological case study following one Korean-American child’s negotiation and development of racial-cultural identity in the United States during the first three years of school. This study aimed to closely explore, understand, and explain the critical incidents experienced by a Korean-American child to recognize and negotiate her racial-cultural identity, and the strategies she used to navigate through the school culture. As a result, four themes were identified... -
Effects of electrochemical oxidation of carbon fibers on interfacial shear strength using a micro-bond method
Dong-Kyu Kim, Kay-Hyeok An, Yun Hyuk Bang, Lee-Ku Kwac, Sang-Yub Oh, Byung-Joo Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.19 4 32-39 (8 pages)
In this work, we studied the effects of electrochemical oxidation treatments of carbon fibers (CFs) on interfacial adhesion between CF and epoxy resin with various current densities. The surface morphologies and properties of the CFs before and after electrochemical-oxidation-treatment were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and single-fiber contact angle. The... -

Developing Global Citizens? Possibilities and Problems of Youth-Conference Programming
12 Pages
5 208-219 (12 pages)
Youth for Global Engagement (YGE) is a summer program assembling late adolescents from diverse geographic locales to converse and create projects to be carried out upon homecoming. We engaged a mixed-methods study to gain insight about the development of global citizenship knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among participants over one year. Participants engaged in pre and post-surveys, interviews on-site and we observed learning activities and read participantgenerated objects. Three themes... -
Dewey, Freire, and Foucault and an Ever-Evolving Philosophy of (Mathematics) Education
9 Pages
2 70-78 (9 pages)
In this essay, the author provides a working definition of philosophy from a cultural point of view, and argues the need for mathematics educators to develop their philosophy of mathematics teaching and learning or, to speak more broadly, their philosophy of education. He then historically situates three scholars?John Dewey, Paulo Freire, and Michel Foucault?who have been instrumental in the formulation of his philosophy of education. Next, he shares how the philosophies of these three scholars... -
Incidental FonF in Adult EFL Classrooms - Participation Structure and Learner Uptake -
23 Pages
6 341-363 (23 pages)
The present study investigated the distribution of incidental focus on form (FonF) occurring in intact EFL classrooms and its relationship with the participation structure (i.e., whole class/small group/one-on-one interactions) and learner uptake (successful uptake vs. unsuccessful uptake) across the types of FonF (reactive vs. preemptive FonF) and participation structure. The data from eleven hours of communicative lessons from five classes were analyzed according to the types of incidental... -
Dehydroevodiamine·HCl enhances cognitive function in memory-impaired rat models
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2017, Vol.21 No.1 7 55-64 (10 pages)
Progressive memory impairment such as that associated with depression, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) can interfere with daily life. In particular, AD, which is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, prominently features a memory and learning impairment that is related to changes in acetylcholine and abnormal β-amyloid (Aβ) deposition in the brain. In the present study, we investigated the effects of dehydroevodiamine·HCl (DHED) on cognitive improvement and the related mechanism in... -

BEYOND YOUNG PEOPLE’S PRIVACY ONLINE: DATA LITERACY PROJECTS FOR CRITICAL DATA EDUCATION
The Journal of Education 21 Pages
The Journal of Education 2020, Vol.3 No.2 2 19-39 (21 pages)
This paper is based on a presentation given at the ‘Rethinking Literacy, Digital Competency and Media Education in the Age of Digital Platforms’ webinar hosted by Gyeongin National University in September 2020. In the paper, I explore the difficulties of implementing ‘critical data education’ programs in schools with children and young people. Reporting on three research projects with over 150 Australian students (aged 8-16 years), I explore the challenges and opportunities that arose. Each...
