다공성 소재는 문자 그대로 많은 양의 기공을 함유하는 소재로서, 세재의 제조시 다량으로 사용되어 온 제올라이트 및 오염물질 제거용으로 사용되어 온 다공성 탄소와 같은 예에서 보는 바와 같이 오랜 세월동안 우리 생활의 일부로 존재해 왔다. 그러나, 이들 소재에 존재하는 기공들은 그 크기나 모양에 있어 규칙성 및 균일성을 찾아보기 힘들기 때문에 기공크기는 서브나노에서 서브미크론 혹은 미크론 크기까지 통계적 분포를 보이며 기공의 모양은 프랙탈적 특징을 나타내었다. -
