Striatum has important roles in motor control, habitual learning and memory. It receives glutamatergic inputs from neocortex and thalamus, and dopaminergic inputs from substantia nigra. We examined effects of dopamine (DA) on the corticostriatal synaptic transmission using in vitro extracellular recording technique in rat brain corticostriatal slices. Synaptic responses were elicited by stimulation of cortical glutamatergic inputs on the corpus callosum and recorded in the dorsal striatum.... -

donor, decreased cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner and induced genomic DNA fragmentation with cell shrinkage and chromatin condensation. EGCG diminished the decrement of cell viability and the formation of apoptotic morphologenic changes as well as DNA fragmentation by SNP. EGCG played as an antioxidant that attenuated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by SNP. The cells treated with SNP showed downregulation of Bcl-2, but upregulation of Bax. EGCG ameliorated the... -
Naltrexone Inhibits Catecholamine Secretion Evoked by Nicotinic Receptor Stimulation in the Perfused Rat Adrenal Medulla
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.4 6 223-230 (8 pages)
The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of naltrexone, an opioid antagonist, on secretion of catecholamines (CA) evoked by cholinergic nicotinic stimulation and membrane-depolarization from the isolated perfused rat adrenal gland and to establish the mechanism of its action. Naltrexone (3⁓106 M) perfused into an adrenal vein for 60 min produced time-dependent inhibition in CA secretory responses evoked by ACh (5.32⁓103 M), high K... -
The Role of Mitochondrial ATP-sensitive Potassium Channel on Intestinal Pacemaking Activity
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.4 4 209-214 (6 pages)
Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) are the pacemaker cells that generate slow waves in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In the present study, we investigated the effect of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium (mitoKATP) channel on pacemaking activity in cultured ICCs from murine small intestine by using whole-cell patch clamp techniques. Under current clamp mode, at 10μM glibenclamide, there was no change in pacemaking activity of ICCs. At 30μM glibenclamide, an inhibitor of the ATP sensitive... -
Inhibition of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Ca2+ Uptake by Pyruvate and Fatty Acid in H9c2 Cardiomyocytes: Implications for Diabetic Cardiomyopathy

0.8 mM oleic acid resulted in a dose-dependent suppression of SR Ca2-uptake. However, these effects were attenuated in high glucose-cultured cells, with no significant changes by oleic acid concentrations lower than 0.4 mM. These results demonstrate that (1) increased pyruvate oxidation is the key mechanism in the SR dysfunction observed in high glucose-cultured cardiomyocytes; (2) exogenous fatty acid also suppresses SR Ca2-uptake, presumably through a mechanism shared by glucose. -
Preventive Effect of Serotonergic Drugs on LPS-Induced Acute Anorexia in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.3 3 149-154 (6 pages)
The aim of the present study was to determine whether serotonergic drugs could reverse lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anorexia in rats. LPS (500μg/kg body weight) and all serotonergic drugs, except for 8-OH-DPAT (subcutaneous), were injected intraperitoneally into Sprague-Dawley rats. Without the LPS injection, 8-OH-DPAT (1A agonist), metergoline (1/2 antagonist), and mianserin (2A/2C antagonist) exerted no effects on food intake at any of the doses tested, but ketanserin (2A antagonist)... -
Higher Expression of TRPM7 Channels in Murine Mature B Lymphocytes than Immature Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.2 1 69-76 (8 pages)
TRPM7, a cation channel protein permeable to various metal ions such as Mg2, is ubiquitously expressed in variety of cells including lymphocytes. The activity of TRPM7 is tightly regulated by intracellular Mg2, thus named Mg2-inhibited cation (MIC) current, and its expression is known to be critical for the viability and proliferation of B lymphocytes. In this study, the level of MIC current was compared between immature (WEHI-231) and mature (Bal-17) B lymphocytes. In both... -

Very little research has been carried out on safflower seed for the prevention and treatment of the bone deficiency diseases, including osteoporosis, which are supported by scientific evidences. In the present study, 3μl of 0.1% dried crude extract or 2μl of 0.1% dried aqueous fraction were shown to significantly accelerate the rate of differentiation of osteoblast. Also, the crude extract and aqueous fraction increased the [Ca2]i of the cultured osteoblast cells: 3μl of 0.1% dried... -

D- amphetamine (10∼100μM), when perfused into an adrenal vein of the rat adrenal gland for 60 min, enhanced the CA secretory responses evoked by ACh (5.32⁓103 M), excess K (5.6⁓102 M, a membrane depolarizer), DMPP (104 M, a selective neuronal nicotinic Nn-receptor agonist)... -
Acetylcholine Induces Hyperpolarization Mediated by Activation of K(Ca) Channels in Cultured Chick Myoblasts
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.1 6 37-44 (8 pages)
Our previous report demonstrated that chick myoblasts are equipped with Ca2-permeable stretch- activated channels and Ca2-activated potassium channels (KCa), and that hyperpolarization-induced by KCa channels provides driving force for Ca2 influx through the stretch-activated channels into the cells. Here, we showed that acetylcholine (ACh) also hyperpolarized the membrane of cultured chick myoblasts, suggesting that nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) may be another...
