Ribgrass Mosaic Tobamovirus Occurred on Chinese Cabbage in Korea
The Plant Pathology Journal 12 Pages
5 328-339 (12 pages)
A tobamovirus, Ribgrass mosaic virus (RMV), was identified newly from chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. pekinensis) in Korea. Virus disease incidence of RMV on chinese cabbage was 37.9% in alpine area on August in 1993. RMV induced the symptoms of necrotic ring spots, necrotic streak on midrib and malformation. RMV, Ca1 and Ca3 isolate, could infect 35 species out of 45 plants including Chenopodium amaranticolor. Physical properties of RMV Ca1 isolate were very stable as 10-8 over for... -
Detection of Pathotypes and Genetic Diversity of Cercospora beticola
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
2 306-312 (7 pages)
The pathotypes of Cercospora beticola, causal agent of sugar beet leaf spot disease, were identified by application of pathogenicity test using 100 isolates obtained from the provinces with intensive sugar beet cultivation. For the identification of pathotypes, five sugar beet cultivars were used each with different resistance factors. Cultivar reactions were determined by inoculation of cultivars with the isolates under controlled conditions and measuring disease severity on the 15th day... -
Simple and Reliable DNA Extraction Method for the Dark Pigmented Fungus, Cercospora sojina
The Plant Pathology Journal 4 Pages
15 289-292 (4 pages)
This study used a modified cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) method to efficiently extract DNA from the plant pathogenic fungus Cercospora sojina. Total DNA yield obtained by this method was approximately 1 mg/g of mycelia (fresh weight), and the mean ratio of A260/A280 and A260/A230 were 2.04 and 2.1, respectively. The results of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis, digestion with restriction enzymes, and Southern hybridization indicated that polysaccharides were effectively... -
Microwave Irradiation-assisted RNA Extraction from Woody Tissues for Plant Virus Detection
The Plant Pathology Journal 3 Pages
14 286-288 (3 pages)
mortar or mechanical equipment has been the preferred method for obtaining high yields of total RNA; this method, however, is both time-consuming and expensive. Additionally, homogenization may generate excessive endogenous RNases, polyphenolics, and other substances that reduce the quality and quantity of RNA. In this study, we describe the microwave irradiation-assisted RNA extraction (MIRE) technique which, without tissue disruption and homogenization, allows for the cost-effective and rapid... -
Production of a Phytotoxic Compound, 3-Phenylpropionic Acid by a Bacterial Endophyte, Arthrobacter humicola YC6002 Isolated from the Root of Zoysia japonica
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
6 245-252 (8 pages)
An endophytic bacterial strain, Arthrobacter humicola YC6002, was isolated from a surface sterilized root of Korean turf grass (Zoysia japonica) collected from Jinju, Korea. This strain showed inhibitory effect on germination and shoot growth of radish. The inhibition of germination and shoot growth of radish seeds varied depending on the age of culture and the temperature at which it was incubated. The culture filtrate of 1/10- strength Tryptic Soy Broth medium, incubated for 48 hours at 30 -
Effect of Chitosan Solution on the Inhibition of Pseudomonas fluorescens Causing Bacterial Head Rot of Broccoli
The Plant Pathology Journal 5 Pages
13 189-193 (5 pages)
The in vitro antibacterial properties of two kinds of chitosan solutions and their effect in protection of broccoli from bacterial head rot disease were evaluated. Results showed that the two kinds of chitosan solution at different concentrations exhibited strong antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas fluorescens. However, the antibacterial activity of chitosan A solution increased with the increase of chitosan concentration up to 0.10 mg/ml while the antibacterial activity of chitosan B... -
Elevated CO2 and Temperature Effects on the Incidence of Four Major Chili Pepper Diseases
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
11 178-184 (7 pages)
Four major diseases of chili pepper including two fungal diseases, anthracnose (Colletotrichum acutatum) and Phytophthora blight (Phytophthora capsici), and two bacterial diseases, bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum) and bacterial spot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria), were investigated under future climatechange condition treatments in growth chambers. Treatments with elevated CO2 and temperature were maintained at 720 ppm -
Production of Surfactin and Iturin by Bacillus licheniformis N1 Responsible for Plant Disease Control Activity
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
10 170-177 (8 pages)
Bacillus licheniformis N1, previously developed as a biofungicide formulation N1E to control gray mold disease of plants, was investigated to study the bacterial traits that may be involved in its biological control activity. Two N1E based formulations, bacterial cell based formulation PN1E and culture supernatant based formulation SN1E, were evaluated for disease control activity against gray mold disease of tomato and strawberry plants. Neither PN1E nor SN1E was as effective as the original... -
Microbial Population, Aflatoxin Contamination and Predominant Aspergillus Species in Korean Stored Rice
The Plant Pathology Journal 9 Pages
4 121-129 (9 pages)
We evaluated microbial populations and aflatoxin production in unhulled and white rice from rice processing complexes of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation in five regions in Korea and identified three predominant Aspergillus species. Fungal and bacterial populations in rice samples were significantly different between regions in 2007. Aflatoxins were also detected and varied at the levels of 2.45 - 3.43 ng per g unhulled rice grain and 1.29 - 2.09 ng per g white rice grain.... -
Effect of Acibenzolar-S-methyl and Rahnella aquatilis (Ra39) on Chitinase and β-1, 3-glucanase Activities and Disease Resistance of Apple Plants
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
9 63-69 (7 pages)
a high decrease of the disease, 82% and 58% respectively; this was correlated with a reduction of the growth of the pathogen within host plants up to 64% and 49.5% respectively. Further studies in the field under artificial infection condition during full bloom revealed that application of ASM and R. aquatilis Ra39 with Gala variety resulted in a control effect up to 21 and 29% respectively. In physiological studies, enhanced activities of PR-proteins (chitinase and β-1, 3-glucanase) were...
