Examination of Correlations Between Several Biochemical Components and Powdery Mildew Resistance of Flax Cultivars
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
3 149-155 (7 pages)
A field trial was conducted in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 growing seasons at Giza Agricultural Research Station to examine correlations between some biochemical componets and powdery mildews (PMs) resistance in flax cultivars. Nine flax cultivars could be divided into five distinct groups, i.e., highly susceptible (Cortland and C.I. 2008), moderately susceptible (Giza 7, and Marshall), moderately resistant (Cass), resistant (Koto, Dakota and Wilden), and highly resistant (Ottowa 770B). The... -
Begomoviruses and Their Emerging Threats in South Korea: A Review
The Plant Pathology Journal 14 Pages
1 123-136 (14 pages)
on the occurrence of begomoviral disease in South Korea, however, the etiology of other plant viral diseases are known since last century. The first begomovirus infected sample was collected from sweet potato plant in 2003 and since then there has been gradual increase in the begomoviral epidemics specially in tomato and sweet potato crops. So far, 48 begomovirus sequences originating from various plant species have been submitted in public sequence data base from different parts of the country.... -
Research Notes : Molecular Evidence of Recombination on Korean Isolates of Tomato yellow Leaf curl virus by Nucleotide Transversions and Transitions

and other TYLCV isolates [Thailand (AF206674), Iran (AJ132711), and Israel (X76319)]. TYLCV Jeju isolate was characterized by two recombination events (E1 and E2) caused by the presence of E1 in ORF V1 and C3, which may seem to be the mutations of the high nucleotide transversion and transition rate. Collectively, our results suggest that the occurrence of nucleotide transversions and transitions in TYLCV DNA-A might have induced novel recombination events within the TYLCV Korea isolates. -
Research Articles : Evaluation and Verification of Barley Genotypes with Known Genes for Resistance to Barley yellow mosaic virus and Barley mild mosaic virus Under Field Conditions in South Korea
The Plant Pathology Journal 9 Pages
4 324-332 (9 pages)
Soil-borne barley yellow mosaic disease caused by Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) or Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) gives a serious threat to the winter barley cultivated in the southern regions in Korea. It is important to develop resistant varieties for stable and high-yield production. The objectives of this study were to evaluate 22 genotypes of exotic barley germplasms carrying the resistance genes rym1 through rym12, with the exception of rym10, and to determine the genes that confer... -
RT-PCR Detection of Five Quarantine Plant RNA Viruses Belonging to Potyand Tospoviruses
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
12 291-296 (6 pages)
In order to detect quarantine plant viruses, we developed reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) primer pairs for five single-stranded (ss) plant RNA viruses that are not currently reported in Korea but could be potential harmful plant viral pathogens. Three viruses such as Chilli veinal mottle virus (ChiVMV), Colombian datura virus (CDV), and Tobacco etch virus (TEV) belong to the genus Potyvirus while Chrysanthemum stem necrosis virus (CSNV) and Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV)... -
Potential Roles of Essential Oils on Controlling Plant Pathogenic Bacteria Xanthomonas Species: A Review
The Plant Pathology Journal 18 Pages
2 207-224 (18 pages)
Diseases caused by plant pathogenic bacteria constitute an emerging threat to global food security. Xanthomonas is a large genus of Gram-negative bacteria that cause disease in several host plants leading to considerable losses in productivity and quality of harvests. Despite the ranges of controlling techniques available, the microbiological safety of economically important crops and crop plants including fruits and vegetables continues to be a major concern to the agriculture industry. On the... -
Differential Responses of Soybean Cultivars to Cercospora sojina Isolates, the Causal Agent of Frogeye Leaf Spot in Korea
The Plant Pathology Journal 4 Pages
11 183-186 (4 pages)
(Anpeong, Bogwang, Cheongdu No. 1, Cheongja No. 3, Dachae, Daemang, Jangwon, Namhae, Sowon, Taegwang) were selected and inoculated with seven isolates for further testing pathogenic variance. Interestingly, 6 out of 7 tested C. sojina isolates revealed differential ability in infecting different soybean cultivars. This result may indicate the possibility of new race occurrence or pathogenic variation; this also presents evidence for prevalent FLS occurrence during humid and hot weather in Korea. -
Roles of Ascospores and Arthroconidia of Xylogone ganodermophthora in Development of Yellow Rot in Cultivated Mushroom, Ganoderma lucidum
The Plant Pathology Journal 10 Pages
6 138-147 (10 pages)
Xylogone ganodermophthora, an ascomycetous fungus, is known to cause yellow rot in the cultivated mushroom Ganoderma lucidum. In this study, we investigated the dissemination of this fungal pathogen in G. lucidum grown in cultivation houses. To determine the role of ascospores produced by X. ganodermophthora in disease development, we constructed a green fluorescent proteinlabeled transgenic strain. This X. ganodermophthora strain produced a number of ascomata in the tissues of oak logs on which... -
Development of RT-PCR Based Method for Detecting Five Non-reported Quarantine Plant Viruses Infecting the Family Cucurbitaceae or Solanaceae
The Plant Pathology Journal 5 Pages
15 93-97 (5 pages)
For quarantine purpose, we selected five plant RNA viruses including Cucumber vein yellowing virus (CVYV), Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus (CYSDV), Potato aucuba mosaic virus (PAMV), Potato yellow dwarf virus (PYDV), and Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV), which are not reported in Korea and cause serious economic losses to the family Cucurbitaceae or Solanaceae. To detect those viruses, we employed RT-PCR technique with specific oligonucleotide primer pairs and tested their detection... -
Generation of Antibodies Against Rice stripe virus Proteins Based on Recombinant Proteins and Synthetic Polypeptides
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
7 37-43 (7 pages)
Rice stripe virus (RSV) is one of serious epidemic pathogens for rice species grown in many Asian countries. Therefore, it is necessary to produce a diagnostic detection kit applicable in fields for RSV detection. In this study, RSV proteins that were derived from recombinant proteins and synthetic polypeptides as antigens were generated and were raised in rabbits for antiserum production. Among seven proteins in RSV, genes that code for NCP and NS3 proteins were cloned and subcloned into vector...
