Monolithic porous carbon materials prepared from polyurethane foam templates
Jo?o Pires, Andr? Janeiro, Filipe J. Oliveira, Alexandre C. Bastos, Mois?s L. Pinto 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.18 2 11-17 (7 pages)
Monolithic carbon foams with hierarchical porosity were prepared from polyurethane templates and resol precursors. Mesoporosity was achieved through the use of soft templating with surfactant Pluronic F127, and macroporosity from the polyurethane foams was retained. Conditions to obtain high porosity materials were optimized. The best materials have high specific surface areas (380 and 582 m2 g?1, respectively) and high electrical conductivity, which make them good candidates for supports in... -

Jee-Woo Yang, Da Young Jin, Ji Eun Lee, Seung Goo Lee, Won Ho Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.3 7 203-210 (8 pages)
This study fabricated low thermal conductive polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers containing cellulose particles while maintaining their mechanical properties. The high thermal conductivity of carbon fibers limits their application as a high temperature insulator in various systems such as an insulator for propulsion parts in aerospace or missile systems. By controlling process parameters such as the heat treatment temperature of the cellulose particles and the amount of cellulose added,... -
Functionalization of graphene nanoplatelets using sugar azide for graphene/epoxy nanocomposites
Saswata Bose, Lawrence T. Drzal 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.2 5 101-106 (6 pages)
We report a covalent functionalization of graphene nanoparticles (GnPs) employing 2,3,4-Tri-O-acetyl-β-D-xylopyranosyl azide followed by fabrication of an epoxy/functionalized graphene nanocomposite and an evaluation of its thermo-mechanical performance. Successful functionalization of GnP was confirmed via thermal and spectroscopic study. Raman spectroscopy indicated that the functionalization was on the edge of the graphene sheets; the basal plane was not perturbed as a result of the... -
Effect of surface modification of carbon felts on capacitive deionization for desalination
Jong-Ho Lee, Hong-Joo Ahn, Donghwan Cho, Jeong-Il Youn, Young-Jig Kim, Han-Jun Oh 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.2 4 93-100 (8 pages)
Surface modified carbon felts were utilized as an electrode for the removal of inorganic ions from seawater. The surfaces of the carbon felts were chemically modified by alkaline and acidic solutions, respectively. The potassium hydroxide (KOH) modified carbon felt exhibited high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas and large pore volume, and oxygencontaining functional groups were increased during KOH chemical modification. However, the BET surface area significantly decreased by nitric... -
Preparation and characterization of carbon fiber-reinforced thermosetting composites: a review
Fan-Long Jin, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 11 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.2 1 67-77 (11 pages)
fibers (CFs) have a unique combination of properties which allow them to be widely used as reinforcing materials in advanced polymer composites. The mechanical properties of CF-reinforced polymer composites are governed mainly by the quality of interfacial adhesion between the CFs and the polymer matrix. Surface treatments of CFs are generally carried out to introduce chemical functional groups on the fiber surfaces, which provide the ability to control the surface characteristics of CFs. In... -
Conducting and interface characterization of carbonate-type organic electrolytes containing EMImBF4 as an additive against activated carbon electrode
Mingyeong Kim, Kyungmin Kim and Seok Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.1 8 51-56 (6 pages)
The surface characterizations were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy method and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. From the experimental results, increasing the EMImBF4 content increased the ionic conductivity and reduced bulk resistance and interfacial resistance. In particular, after adding 15 vol% EMImBF4 in 0.2 M SBPBF4 PC/DMC electrolyte, the organic electrolyte showed superior capacitance and interfacial resistance. However, when EMImBF4 content exceeded 15 vol%, the capacitance was... -

In this study, in order to improve the thermal and electrical properties of epoxy/graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), surface modifications of GNPs are conducted using silane coupling agents. Three silane coupling agents, i.e. 2-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)-ethyltrimethoxysilane (ETMOS), 3-glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane (GPTS), and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS), were used. Among theses, GPTMS exhibits the best modification performance for fabricating GNP-incorporated epoxy composites. The effect... -
An overview of new oxidation methods for polyacrylonitrile?based carbon fibers
Hye Kyoung Shin, Mira Park, Hak-Yong Kim and Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.1 2 11-18 (8 pages)
The process of oxidizing polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers converts them into an infusible and non-flammable state prior to carbonization. This represents one of the most important stages in determining the mechanical properties of the final carbon fibers, but the most commonly used methods, such as thermal treatment (200°C to 300°C), tend to waste a great deal of process time, money, and energy. There is therefore a need to develop more advanced oxidation methods for PAN precursor...
