The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2004, Vol.8 No.2 1 69-76 (8 pages)
A variety of G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are expressed in the presynaptic terminals of central and peripheral synapses and play regulatory roles in transmitter release. The patch-clamp whole-cell recording technique, applied to the calyx of Held presynaptic terminal in brainstem slices of rodents, has made it possible to directly examine intracellular mechanisms underlying the GPCR-mediated presynaptic inhibition. At the calyx of Held, bath-application of agonists for GPCRs such as GABAB... -
Stretch-activated K+ Channels in Rat Atrial Myocytes
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2003, Vol.7 No.6 8 341-318 (8 pages)
Mechanical stimuli to the cardiac myocytes initiate many biochemical and physiological events. Stretch-activated cation channels have been suggested to mediate these events. In this study, cell-attached and inside-out excised-patch clamp methods were used to identify stretch-activated cation channels in adult rat atrial myocytes. Channel openings were increased in cell-attached configuration when negative pressure was applied to the pipette, and also in inside-out excised patches by negative... -

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2003, Vol.7 No.4 7 231-238 (8 pages)
The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of bradykinin on secretion of catecholamines (CA) evoked by stimulation of cholinergic receptors and membrane depolarization from the isolated perfused model of the rat adrenal glands, and to elucidate its mechanism of action. Bradykinin (3⁓108 M) alone produced a weak secretory response of the CA. however, the perfusion with bradykinin (3⁓108 M) into an adrenal vein of the rat adrenal gland for 90 min enhanced... -
Intrinsic Gating in Inward Rectifier Potassium Channels (Kir2.1) with Low Polyamine Affinity Generated by Site Directed Mutagenesis
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 12 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2003, Vol.7 No.3 3 131-142 (12 pages)
We have studied mutant forms of Kir2.1 in which an aspartate residue (D172), important for gating by intracellular polyamines, is replaced by one of three basic residues (Arg, Lys or His). Such channels are highly selective for K+, but show inward rectification that is a shallow function of voltage compared with that found in wild type. This inward rectification occurs with a reduced affinity for spermine and persists in the absence of polyamines. Though the unitary current-voltage relation... -
Effects of Local Anesthetics on Rotational Mobility of n-(9-Anthroyloxy)stearic Acid in Neuronal Membranes
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2003, Vol.7 No.3 1 119-124 (6 pages)
To elucidate the molecular mechanism of pharmacological action of local anesthetics, we studied membrane actions of tetracaine, bupivacaine, lidocaine, prilocaine and procaine. Fluorescence polarization of n-(9-anthroyloxy)stearic acid (n-AS) was used to examine the effects of these local anesthetics on differential rotational mobility of different positions of the number of synaptosomal plasma membrane vesicle (SPMV) phospholipid carbon atoms. The four membrane components differed with respect... -
Changes in Excitability of Neurons in Rat Medial Vestibular Nucleus Following Vestibular Neurectomy
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 5 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.6 2 287-291 (5 pages)
Intrinsic excitabilities of acutely isolated medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) neurons of rats with normal labyrinth and with undergoing vestibular compensation from 30 min to 24 h after unilateral vestibular deafferentation (UVD) were compared. In control rats, proportions of type A and B cells were 30 and 70%, respectively, however, the proportion of type A cells increased following UVD. Bursting discharge and irregular firing patterns were recorded from 2 to 12 h post UVD. The spontaneous... -
Interactions between Estradiol-17β-BSA and Calcitropic Hormones in Ca2+ Uptake in Renal Proximal Tubule Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.5 5 261-268 (8 pages)
The aim of the present study was to investigate the interaction of estradiol-17β-bovine serum albumin (E2-BSA) and calcitropic hormones, such as parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, and vitamin D, in regulation of Ca2 uptake in primary cultured renal proximal tubule cells. Statistically significant increase in Ca2 uptake was found from 2 hours after E2-BSA (109 M) treatment, while estradiol-17β (109 M) did not affect. Treatment of the cells with E2-BSA (109 M)... -
Phytoestrogen-Induced Phosphorylation of MAP Kinase in Osteoblasts is Mediated by Membrane Estrogen Receptor
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.3 7 165-170 (6 pages)
We have previously demonstrated that phytoestrogens isolated from safflower seeds significantly attenuated bone loss in ovariectomized rats, and directly stimulated proliferation and differentiation of cultured osteoblastic cells. In an attempt to elucidate underlying cellular mechanisms, in the present study we investigated effects of 17β-estradiol (E2) and phytoestrogens such as matairesinol and acacetin, a type of lignan and flavonoid, respectively, on activation of mitogen activated... -
A Role of Mitogen Activated Protein Kinases and Inflammatory Responses in Gender Differences in Kidney Ischemia Injury
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.3 5 155-160 (6 pages)
It is not known whether gender differences play a role in susceptibility to ischemic acute renal failure. Thus, we examined if there were any differences in susceptibility between male and female mice to kidney ischemic injury, and if so, whether it is due to differences in mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) or inflammatory responses to ischemia. Female mice were protected against kidney ischemia when compared with males. Thirty minutes of bilateral ischemia resulted in marked functional... -
Molecular Aspects of Organic Ion Transporters in the Kidney
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 16 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.2 1 107-122 (16 pages)
A function of the kidney is elimination of a variety of xenobiotics ingested and wasted endogenous compounds from the body. Organic anion and cation transport systems play important roles to protect the body from harmful substances. The renal proximal tubule is the primary site of carrier-mediated transport from blood into urine. During the last decade, molecular cloning has identified several families of multispecific organic anion and cation transporters, such as organic anion transporter...
