Educator Decision Making about Outdoor Learning Spaces in Early Childhood Education and Care Services
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 11 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2018, Vol.12 No.2 6 93-103 (11 pages)
In Australia, the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) invites educators in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) services to view children as learners who are confident and involved (Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, 2009) while the National Quality Standard (NQS) contends that the “educational program and practice of educators are child-centred, stimulating and maximise opportunities for enhancing and extending each child’s learning and... -
Emotion Map Making. Discovering Teachers’ Relationships with Nature
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 26 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2018, Vol.12 No.2 3 31-56 (26 pages)
Placing the focus on the adult’s viewpoint meant investigating their experiences and how these can condition the children's relations with more natural, destructured spaces. The results gathered by two tools, heart maps and lived-experience descriptions reveal difficulties teachers experience in connection with some spaces which are considered challenging and the necessity to support teachers in the reappropriation of those spaces with a view to identifying new perspectives for improvement. -
Whose Job Is It? Parents’ Perspectives on Volunteering to Help in New Zealand Kindergartens
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages

with three types of volunteering to help at the kindergarten. Analysis of the semi-structured interview data has revealed enhancers (e.g., benefits for the child, justification of fundraising) and impediments (e.g., limited time, school commitment) to parent volunteering to help as well as the tensions in practice(e.g., relying on core parents, limited resource). The findings support the legitimacy of routine tasks and fundraising and highlight the importance of parent volunteering to help. -
BETTER THAN Bubble WRAP: Do We “Over Regulate and Over Protect” Children at the Expense of Them Learning How to “Take Risks”?
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 17 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.1 6 111-127 (17 pages)
Throughout the World more children die and are disabled from injury than illness and disease, despite the fact that we are living in a society that is perceived to be safer than it has ever been. Environment and product modification means we have safer cars, homes, workplaces and play areas. Legislation and policy approaches have been introduced to regulate and enforce safe practices. However, in some cases this has brought about an over regulated and over protective societal change. Experiences... -

Maria Perlita E. de Leon, Micah Denise S. del Mundo, Ma. Lovena V. Moneva, Anna May L. Navarrete Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.3 1 1-20 (20 pages)
The study investigated helping behaviors in two laboratory preschool classes in a university in the Philippines and the contexts in which these behaviors were displayed. Using non-participant observation, 34 children between 3 to 5 years old were video recorded at least one hour for nine days spread across a period of one month during unstructured class activities. Storytelling sessions followed the observation to identify the ideas children have about helping. Data were organized using event... -
Emotions of expatriate children and families transitioning into Malaysia: A cultural historical perspective
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 23 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 8 129-151 (23 pages)
collective emotions present at home and school during the transition. Findings positioned from the child’s perspective show heightened emotions gradually reducing over time with the support of the mother and teacher (Vygotsky, 1987). Further findings reveal that the absence of everyday routines adds to the range of heightened emotions felt by the individual child and collectively in the family and attending school is one of the first stable routines that the child undertakes. It is argued that... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 23 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 5 69-91 (23 pages)
This article explores how children of Latino immigrants responded to a learning environment where they could influence how and what they learned. Using ethnographic data from the much larger Agency and Young Children project in the United States, this article describes how a particular six year old classroom serving mostly children of Latino immigrants responded in ways that not only increased content knowledge in subjects such as science and literacy but also increased the amount of shared or... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 17 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2013, Vol.7 No.3 5 103-119 (17 pages)
Recently in Australia there has been a shift towards the increased use of formal early childhood education and care services. Federal, state and territory policy makers have responded with reform agendas designed to improve the quality of early childhood education and care. There are few studies that provide insights into community perceptions of current initiatives in early childhood education policy and their perceived effectiveness with families. This study begins to address this void by... -
Individual and Contextual Factors Shaping Teachers’ Attitudes and Responses to Bullying among Young Children: Is Education Important?
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 33 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2013, Vol.7 No.3 4 69-101 (33 pages)
This study examined how pre- and post-service early childhood teachers’ beliefs and responses to bullying among young children differ by level of qualification, type of bullying and whether or not it was witnessed. Results showed 1st and 4th-year student- and diploma-qualified teachers perceived acts of physical bullying to be more serious than verbal or relational bullying to a greater extent than did degree-qualified teachers. Degree-qualified teachers were less susceptible to bullying type... -
Taiwanese Mothers as Their Child’s First English Teacher: Issues and Challenges
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2013, Vol.7 No.3 1 1-18 (18 pages)
In Taiwan, current policy encourages parents to participate fully in their children’s education and to regard themselves as their children’s first teacher. There is, however, little data about whether mothers do indeed perceive themselves as a “teacher” of English language and literacy to their pre-school-aged children in home contexts. Nor is it clear how they enact this role and responsibility during everyday interactions with their children. This study investigated Taiwanese mothers’...
