Effects of Interleukin-1β and Tumor Necrosis Factor-α on the Release of Collagenase and Gelatinase from Osteoblasts
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.5 6 269-274 (6 pages)
A large number of factors such as osteotropic hormones, cytokines, or growth factors are related to the bone remodeling which is characterized by the coupling of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and osteoblast-mediated bone formation. Recent investigations have indicated that cytokines such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) play a potential role in the bone resorption associated with a variety of pathological conditions such as inflammatory osteolytic disease.... -
The Preventive Effects of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL on Lovastatin-induced Apoptosis of C6 Glial Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.5 1 235-240 (6 pages)
It has been reported that lovastatin induced cell death and suppressed proliferation in various cell lines. In this study, we examined whether the cytotoxic effects of lovastatin could be prevented by Bcl-2 or Bcl-xL in C6 glial cells. Overexpression of human Bcl-2 or Bcl-xL prevented lovastatin (25μM)- induced changes such as DNA fragmentation, chromatin condensation, disruption of cell membrane, and cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase. Lovastatin-induced inhibition of cell proliferation... -
The Regulation of AP-1 DNA Binding Activity by Long-term Nicotine Stimulation in Bovine Adrenal Medullary Chromaffin Cells Role of Second Messengers
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 4 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.2 7 109-112 (4 pages)
The signal pathways involved in the regulation of AP-1 DNA binding activity in long-term nicotine stimulated bovine adrenal medullary chromaffin (BAMC) cells have not been well characterized. To understand the involvement of second messengers in the regulation of AP-1 DNA binding activity, the present study was designed to define the time-course for inhibition of nicotine-induced responses by cholinergic antagonists, Ca2 and calmodulin (CaM) antagonists, and calcium/calmodulin-dependent... -
Changes in the Expressional Levels of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Ca2+-regulatory Proteins in the Postnatal Developing Rat Heart
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.2 6 101-108 (8 pages)
In the present study, the postnatal developmental changes in the expressional levels of cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2 regulatory proteins, i.e. Ca2-ATPase, phospholamban, and Ca2 release channel, were investigated. Both SR Ca2-ATPase and phospholamban mRNA levels were about 35% of adult levels at birth and gradually increased to adult levels. Protein levels of both SR Ca2-ATPase and phospholamban, which were measured by quantitative immunoblotting,... -
Effect of Ca2+-channel Blockers on Norepinephrine Release in the Rat Hippocampal Slice and Synaptosome
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.2 4 87-92 (6 pages)
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of Ca2-channel blockers in norepinephrine (NE) release from rat hippocampus. Slices and synaptosomes were incubated with [3H]-NE and the releases of the labelled products were evoked by 25 mM KCl stimulation. Nifedipine, diltiazem, nicardipine, flunarizine and pimozide did not affect the evoked and basal release of NE in the slice. But, diltiazem, nicardipine and flunarizine decreased the evoked NE release with a dose-related manner... -
Unchanged Protein Level of Ryanodine Receptor but Reduced [3H] Ryanodine Binding of Cardiac Sarcoplasmic Reticulum from Diabetic Cardiomyopathy Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.5 5 397-405 (9 pages)
The ryanodine receptor, a Ca2 release channel of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), is responsible for the rapid release of Ca2 that activates cardiac muscle contraction. In the excitation-contraction coupling cascade, activation of SR Ca2 release channel is initiated by the activity of sarcolemmal Ca2 channels, the dihydropyridine receptors. Previous study showed that the relaxation defect of diabetic heart was due to the changes of the expressional levels of SR... -
Lipopolysaccharide Inhibits Proliferation of the Cultured Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells by Stimulating Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase and Subsequent Activation of Guanylate Cyclase

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.4 7 343-351 (9 pages)
This study was undertaken to investigate the mechanism of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and nitric oxide (NO) as a regulator of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation. VSMC was primarily cultured from rat aorta and confirmed by the immunocytochemistry with anti-smooth muscle myosin antibody. The number of viable VSMCs were counted, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was measured to assess the degree of cell death. Concentrations of nitrite in the culture medium were measured as an... -

Recently, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been found to be useful in the chemoprevention of colon cancer. To investigate whether indomethacin, an NSAIDs, induces apoptosis and thus assess the possibility of its application in the chemoprevention of human lung cancer, we have performed MTT assay, TUNEL assay, DAPI staining, and flow cytometric analysis using human lung carcinoma cell line NCI-H1299. Through morphological and biochemical analyses, it was demonstrated that... -

We have studied the effects of excitatory amino acids on the expression of the c-fos and c-jun mRNA in rat C6 glioma cells. The glutamate, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), and kainic acid (KA) increased c-fos mRNA level in a concentration-dependent manner. However, they did not affect c-jun mRNA level. In addition, forskolin and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) increased c-fos mRNA level. Furthermore, PMA increased c-jun mRNA level whereas forskolin downregulated c-jun mRNA level. The...
