An overview of new oxidation methods for polyacrylonitrile?based carbon fibers
Hye Kyoung Shin, Mira Park, Hak-Yong Kim and Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.1 2 11-18 (8 pages)
The process of oxidizing polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers converts them into an infusible and non-flammable state prior to carbonization. This represents one of the most important stages in determining the mechanical properties of the final carbon fibers, but the most commonly used methods, such as thermal treatment (200°C to 300°C), tend to waste a great deal of process time, money, and energy. There is therefore a need to develop more advanced oxidation methods for PAN precursor... -
Properties of multi-walled carbon nanotube reinforced epoxy composites fabricated by using sonication and shear mixing
Min Ye Koo, Hon Chung Shin, Won-Seok Kim and Gyo Woo Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages

specimens. The Young’s moduli of the specimens increased as the nanotube filler content was increased in the matrix. As the concentrations of nanotubes filler were increased in the composite specimens, their storage and loss moduli also tended to increase. The specimen having a nanotube filler content of 0.6 wt% showed higher thermal conductivity than that of the other specimens. On the other hand, in the measurement of thermal expansion, specimens having 0.4 and 0.6 wt% filler contents showed... -
Carbon-allotropes: synthesis methods, applications and future perspectives
P. S. Karthik, A. L. Himaja and Surya Prakash Singh 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 19 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.4 1 219-237 (19 pages)
The element carbon has been used as a source of energy for the past few hundred years, and now in this era of technology, carbon has played a significant and very prominent role in almost all fields of science and technology. So as an honour to this marvellous element, we humans should know about its various forms of existence. In this review article, we shed light on all possible carbon-allotropes; similarities in their synthesis techniques and the starting materials; their wide range of... -
Effect of microporosity on nitrogen-doped microporous carbons for electrode of supercapacitor
Eun-A Cho, Seul-Yi Lee, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 4 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.3 9 210-213 (4 pages)
Nitrogen-doped microporous carbons were prepared using a polyvinylidene fluoride/melamine mixture. The electrochemical performance of the nitrogen-doped microporous carbons after being subjected to different carbonization conditions was investigated. The nitrogen to carbon ratio and specific surface area decreased with an increase in the carbonization temperature. However, the maximum specific capacitance of 208 F/g was obtained at a carbonization temperature of 800°C because it produced the... -
Influence of ionic liquid additives on the conducting and interfacial properties of organic solvent-based electrolytes against an activated carbon electrode
Kyungmin Kim, Yongju Jung, Seok Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.3 5 187-191 (5 pages)
This study reports on the influence of N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate (PYR14BF4) ionic liquid additive on the conducting and interfacial properties of organic solvent based electrolytes against a carbon electrode. We used the mixture of ethylene carbonate/dimethoxyethane (1:1) as an organic solvent electrolyte and tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TEABF4) as a common salt. Using the PYR14BF ionic liquid as additive produced higher ionic conductivity in the electrolyte and... -
Enhanced electrocapacitive performance and high power density of polypyrrole/graphene oxide nanocomposites prepared at reduced temperature

to Ag/ AgCl at a scan rate (V/s) ranging from 0.2 and 0.001 in potassium hydroxide (1.0 M). The incorporation of GO into the PPY matrix at a reduced temperature has a pronounced effect on the electrocapacitive performance of PNCs. Under identical scan rates (0.001 V/s), PNCs prepared at 10 ± 1°C render improved specific conductivity (526.33 F/g) and power density (731.19 W/Kg) values compared to those prepared at 30 ± 1°C (217.69 F/g, 279.43 W/Kg). PNCs prepared at 10 ± 1°C rendered a... -
Study on lowering the percolation threshold of carbon nanotube-filled conductive polypropylene composites
Seung Bin Park, Moo Sung Lee, Min Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.2 8 117-124 (8 pages)
for pure polypropylene (PP) through two approaches: one using various mixing methods and the other using immiscible polymer blends. Variants of the conductive PP composite filled with MWCNT was prepared by dry mixing, melt mixing, mechanofusion, and compression molding. The percolation threshold (Φc) of the MWCNT-PP composites was most successfully lowered using the mechanofusion process than with any other mixing method (2-5 wt%). The mechanofusion process was found to enhance formation of a... -
Superhydrophobic carbon-based materials: a review of synthesis, structure, and applications
Long-Yue Meng, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 16 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.2 5 89-104 (16 pages)
Materials with appropriate surface roughness and low surface energy can form superhydrophobic surfaces, displaying water contact angles greater than 150°. Superhydrophobic carbon-based materials are particularly interesting due to their exceptional physicochemical properties. This review discusses the various techniques used to produce superhydrophobic carbon-based materials such as carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, graphene, amorphous carbons, etc. Recent advances in emerging fields such as... -

한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.1 5 38-44 (7 pages)
This paper reports the effect of adding reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as a conductive material to the composition of an electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI), a process to remove salt from water using ionic adsorption and desorption driven by external applied voltage. RGO can be synthesized in an inexpensive way by the reduction and exfoliation of GO, and removing the oxygen-containing groups and recovering a conjugated structure. GO powder can be obtained from the modification of Hummers... -
Mechanical and thermal properties of MWCNT-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding
Si-Eun Lee, Seho Cho, Young-Seak Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.1 4 32-37 (6 pages)
strengths of the MWCNT/epoxy composite improved by 59 and 562% with 0.3 phr of MWCNTs, respectively, compared to the epoxy composite without MWCNTs. Thermal stability of the 0.3 phr MWCNT/epoxy composite increased compared to other epoxy composites with MWCNTs. The enhancement of the mechanical and thermal properties of the MWCNT/epoxy nanocomposites is attributed to improved dispersibility and strong interfacial interaction between the MWCNTs and the epoxy in the composites prepared by VARTM.
