GluRs using RT-PCR with specific primers for GluR1-7, KA1 and KA2. We also performed RT-PCR for GluR5, KA1, PLCՂ2, and NCAM/SNAP 25 in isolated single cells from taste buds. Taste epithelium, including circumvallate or foliate papilla, express mRNAs of GluR5 and KA1. However, non-taste tongue epithelium expresses no subunits of non-NMDA GluRs. Isolated single cell RT-PCR reveals that the mRNAs of GluR5 and KA1 are preferentially expressed in Type II and Type III cells over Type I cells. -
Social Isolation Selectively Increases Anxiety in Mice without Affecting Depression-like Behavior

2009). While performing behavioral experiments, however, it is sometimes inevitable that the researcher changes the animals' environments, as by switching the cages in which experimental animals are housed and separating animals raised together into small experimental groups. In this study, we investigated the effect of environmental changes on mice's emotional behaviors by socially isolating them or reducing the size of their cage. We found that social isolation selectively increases the animal... -
Fluoxetine and Sertraline Attenuate Postischemic Brain Injury in Mice

1 h after ischemic insult. Treatment with fluoxetine and sertraline significantly reduced the infarct size. The Evans blue extravasation indices of the fluoxetine- and sertraline-treated groups were significantly lower than that of the vehicle group. Treatment with fluoxetine and sertraline shifted the lower limit of the mean arterial blood pressure for cerebral blood flow autoregulation toward normal, and significantly increased the expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and hypoxia-inducible... -

assay on an Illumina BeadStation 500 GX. One hundred and forty two overweight/ obese (BMI ≥23) and 145 normal (BMI 18 to <23) subjects were analyzed. SNPStats, Haploview, HapAnalyzer, SNPAnalyzer, and Helixtree programs were used for the analysis of genetic data. A linkage disequilibrium (LD) block was discovered among the 5 SNPs selected, including rs17242319, rs1053605, rs243849, and rs2287074. Of the 5 polymorphisms, 2 synonymous SNPs [rs17242319 (Gly226Gly) and rs10775332 (Phe602Phe)] were... -

or survival of viable and infarcted cardiac tissues under oxidative stress. To date, however, the interplay between the mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme system and the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body has not yet been resolved. In the present study, we examined the effects of IR- and IPC-induced oxidative stresses on mitochondrial function in viable and infarcted cardiac tissues. Our results showed that the mitochondria from viable areas in the IR-induced group were swollen and... -
Protein Kinase C Activates ATP-sensitive Potassium Channels in Rabbit Ventricular Myocytes

by the activation of ATP-sensitive K (KATP) channels. We examined whether protein kinase C (PKC) modulated the activity of KATP channels by recording KATP channel currents in rabbit ventricular myocytes using patch-clamp technique and found that phorbol 12,13-didecanoate (PDD) enhanced pinacidil-induced KATP channel activity in the cell-attached configuration; and this effect was prevented by bisindolylmaleimide (BIM). KATP channel activity was not increased by 4α-PDD. In excised inside-... -
Effects ofSphingosine-1-phosphate, Furosemide and Indomethacin on Mucin Release from Airway Goblet Cells

for 30 min or 24 hr in the presence of varying concentrations of the above agents to assess the effects on 3H-mucin release. Sphingosine-1-phosphate stimulated mucin release during 30 min of treatment period in a dose-dependent manner. However, furosemide and indomethacin showed no effect on both basal and stimulated mucin release during 30 min or 24 hr of treatment period. We conclude that sphingosine-1-phosphate can affect mucin release by directly acting on airway mucin-secreting cells. -
CD40 Activation Protects Dendritic Cells from Anticancer Drug-Induced Apoptosis

patients with cancer. Although immunosuppression has been studied, the effects of anticancer drugs on DCs are not fully determined. In this study, we demonstrated that CD40 activation strongly protected DCs from 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or mitomycin C-induced apoptosis. DC- specific surface markers, including CD11c and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II, were used for identifying DCs. CD 40 activation with anti-CD40 mAb significantly enhanced the viability of DCs treated with 5-FU or... -
Changes in Vestibular Nerve Activity Following Acute Hypotension in Rats

simulating hemorrhage was a greater increase than in control animals. The gain of the vestibular nerve with sinusoidal rotation following acute hypotension increased significantly compared to control animals. The acute hypotension induced by SNP or hemorrhage did not change the activity of the afferent vestibular nerve after kynurenic acid injection. These results suggest that acute hypotension produced excitation of the vestibular hair cells via glutamate excitotoxicity in response to ischemia. -
Normal Anxiety, Fear and Depression-related Behaviors in Mice Lacking α-Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide
JonghoLee 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages

to the mice behaviors. αCGRP-knockout mice performed equally as well as wild type mice in the light-dark transition test and in the elevated plus maze test of anxiety. αCGRP-null mice behaved similarly as wild-type mice in the Porsolt swim test of depression. They also exhibited normal learning and memory in the fear conditioning tasks. It is concluded that αCGRP is not essential for mice to be able to perform these tests, despite the presence of αCGRP in the relevant regions of the brain.
