is a surgical emergency. Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) is a low-molecular-weight antioxidant and potent inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of PDTC to testicular torsion-detorsion (T/D) injury. Forty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were separated into four groups. A sham operation was performed in group I. In group II, torsion is performed 2 hours by 720 degree extravaginally testis. In group III, 4 h reperfusion of the... -
Estrogen Rather Than Progesterone Cause Constipation in Both Female and Male Mice

in a decrease in weight of accumulated feces on days 2, 3, 4, and 5 in male mice and on day 5 in female mice, compared with the control group, but progesterone administration did not. Administration of estrogen resulted in a decrease in gastrointestinal movement, compared to normal; however, no significant change was observed by administration of progesterone. In conclusion, estrogen, rather than progesterone, may be a detrimental factor of constipation via decreased bowel movement in mice. -
Loss of hsp70.1 Decreases Functional Motor Recovery after Spinal Cord Injury in Mice

stress. Hsp70.1, a member of the hsp70 family is known to play an important role in cytoprotection from stressful insults. However, the functional role of Hsp70 in motor function after spinal cord injury (SCI) is still unclear. To study the role of hsp70.1 in motor recovery following SCI, we assessed locomotor function in hsp70.1 knockout (KO) mice and their wild-type (WT) mice via the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor rating scale, before and after spinal hemisection at T13 level. We... -
Ischemia/reperfusion Lung Injury Increases Serum Ferritin and Heme Oxygenase-1 in Rats

to develop serious acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) would give a therapeutic advantage. Ferritin and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) are increased by oxidative stress and are potential candidates as a predictive biomarker of ARDS. However, the mechanisms responsible for the increases of ferritin and HO-1, and their relationship to ALI, are unclear. In order to elucidate the interactions between ferritin and HO-1, we studied the changes in ferritin and HO-1 levels in serum and bronchoalveolar... -
Changes of Hemodynamics and Renal Function due to Acute Cadmium Exposure in Rats

in heart rate. There was a fluid-shift into the third space and/or -loss through the kidney, since plasma Na concentration and hematocrit ratio were significantly increased by acute Cd exposure. The present study showed that the sustained hypotensive effect of single-dose Cd on the cardiovascular system might have resulted from the systemic hypovolemia. Furthermore, renal excretion of electrolytes, including Na and K, and urine flow rate were increased by Cd intoxication.... -
Neuroprotective Effects of Lithium on NMDA-induced Excitotoxicity in Mouse Cerebrum

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.3 1 111-122 (12 pages)
Neuroprotective properties of lithium were evaluated by using in vivo NMDA excitotoxicity model. Systemic injection of NMDA to young mice induced neuronal apoptosis mediated by both TNFR-1 and Fas ligand, and long-term lithium treatment showed noticeable neuroprotection against NMDA-induced excitotoxicity: NMDA-damaged neurons expressed several apoptosis-related gene products such as TNFR-1, Fas ligand, and caspase-3, and these gene expressions were not found in the brain of mice chronically... -
Lysophosphatidylcholine Attenuates Endothelium-dependent Relaxation Responses through Inhibition of ACh-induced Endothelial [Ca2+]i Increase

Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), which accumulates in atherosclerotic arteries, has been reported to inhibit endothelium-dependent relaxation (EDR) in many different species. However, the underlying mechanism of LPC-induced inhibition of EDR is still uncertain. In the present study, we measured simultaneously both isometric tension and cytosolic free Ca2 ([Ca2]i) in rabbit carotid strips, and examined the effect of LPC on tension and [Ca2]i. In carotid strips with... -
Mechanism of Acetylcholine-induced Endothelium-dependent Relaxation in the Rabbit Carotid Artery by M3-receptor Activation

The present study were designed to characterize the action mechanisms of acetylcholine (ACh)- induced endothelium-dependent relaxation in arteries precontracted with high K (70 mM). For this, we simultaneously measured both muscle tension and cytosolic free Ca2 concentration ([Ca2]i), using fura-2, in endothelium-intact, rabbit carotid arterial strips. In the artery with endothelium, high K increased both [Ca2]i and muscle tension whereas ACh (10μM)... -

load was decreased by reduction in GFR, but the renal Na excretion returned to the control level due to impaired Na transport in the proximal tubule. Urinary excretion of K did not change during the early phase, but it rose markedly during the late phase of cadmium treatment. These results indicate that a light cadmium intoxication induces a Na retention, and a heavy intoxication results in a K loss. Possible mechanisms for these changes are discussed. -
