High Glucose Induces Connective Tissue Growth Factor Expression and Extracellular Matrix Accumulation in Rat Aorta Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells Via Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase 1/2
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2013, Vol.17 No.4 8 307-314 (8 pages)
Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is a potent pro-fibrotic factor, which is implicated in fibrosis through extracellular matrix (ECM) induction in diabetic cardiovascular complications. It is an important downstream mediator in the fibrotic action of transforming growth factor Ղ (TGFՂ) and is potentially induced by hyperglycemia in human vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Therefore, the goal of this study is to identify the signaling pathways of CTGF effects on ECM... -
Insulin Like Growth Factor Binding Protein-5 Regulates Excessive Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats via ERK 1/2 Phosphorylation
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2013, Vol.17 No.2 7 157-162 (6 pages)
Insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) are important components of insulin growth factor (IGF) signaling pathways. One of the binding proteins, IGFBP-5, enhances the actions of IGF-1, which include the enhanced proliferation of smooth muscle cells. In the present study, we examined the expression and the biological effects of IGFBP-5 in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY). The levels of IGFBP-5 mRNA and protein... -
Acute Hypoxia Activates an ENaC-like Channel in Rat Pheochromocytoma (PC12) Cells

Ca+, and Clₐ ions, and was sensitively blocked by amiloride (200 nM). These characteristics and behaviors were quite similar to those of epithelial sodium channel (ENaC). RT-PCR and Western blot analyses confirmed that ENaC channel was endogenously expressed in PC12 cells. Taken together, a 30-pS ENaC-like channel was activated in response to acute hypoxia in PC12 cells. This is the first evidence of an acute hypoxia-activated Na+ channel that can contribute to depolarization of the cell. -
The Protective Effect of Eupatilin against Hydrogen Peroxide-Induced Injury Involving 5-Lipoxygenase in Feline Esophageal Epithelial Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2012, Vol.16 No.5 4 313-320 (8 pages)
In this study, we focused to identify whether eupatilin (5,7-dihydroxy-3',4',6-trimethoxyflavone), an extract from Artemisia argyi folium, prevents H2O2-induced injury of cultured feline esophageal epithelial cells. Cell viability was measured by the conventional MTT reduction assay. Western blot analysis was performed to investigate the expression of 5-lipoxygenase by H2O2 treatment in the absence and presence of inhibitors. When cells were exposed to 600 ՌM H2O2 for 24 hours, cell... -
Dipeptides Inhibit Melanin Synthesis in Mel-Ab Cells through Down-Regulation of Tyrosinase
Hyun-eLee, Eun-HyunKim, Hye-RyungChoi, UyDongSohn, Hye-YoungYun, KwangJinBaek, NyounSooKwon, Kyoung-ChanPark, Dong-SeokKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 5 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2012, Vol.16 No.4 9 287-291 (5 pages)
This study investigated the effects of proline-serine (PS) and valine-serine (VS) dipeptides on melanogenesis in Mel-Ab cells. Proline-serine and VS significantly inhibited melanin synthesis in a concentration-dependent manner, though neither dipeptide directly inhibited tyrosinase activity in a cell-free system. Both PS and VS down-regulated the expression of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and tyrosinase. In a follow-up study also described here, the effects of these... -
Ethanol Elicits Inhibitory Effect on the Growth and Proliferation of Tongue Carcinoma Cells by Inducing Cell Cycle Arrest
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2012, Vol.16 No.3 1 153-158 (6 pages)
Cellular effects of ethanol in YD-15 tongue carcinoma cells were assessed by MTT assay, caspase activity assay, Western blotting and flow cytometry. Ethanol inhibited the growth and proliferation of YD-15 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner in an MTT assay. The effects of ethanol on cell cycle control at low percent range of ethanol concentration (0 to 1.5%), the condition not inducing YD-15 cell death, was investigated after exposing cells to alcohol for a certain period of time. Western... -
c-Fos Expression in the Nucleus of the Solitary Tract in Response to Salt Stimulation in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2011, Vol.15 No.6 16 437-444 (8 pages)
Salt signals in tongue are relayed to the nucleus of the solitary tract (NST). This signaling is very important to determine whether to swallow salt-related nutrition or not and suggests some implications in discrimination of salt concentration. Salt concentration-dependent electrical responses in the chorda tympani and the NST were well reported. But salt concentration-dependency and spatial distribution of c-Fos in the NST were not well established. In the present study, NaCl signaling in the... -
Blockade of ERK Phosphorylation in the Nucleus Accumbens Inhibits the Expression of Cocaine-induced Behavioral Sensitization in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2011, Vol.15 No.6 10 389-396 (8 pages)
Repeated administration of psychostimulants such as cocaine leads to the development of behavioral sensitization. Extracellular signal-Regulated Kinase (ERK), an enzyme important for long-term neuronal plasticity, has been implicated in such effects of these drugs. Although the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) is the site mediating the expression of behavioral sensitization by drugs of abuse, the precise role of ERK activation in this site has not been determined. In this study we demonstrate that... -
Genipin Selectively Inhibits TNF-α-activated VCAM-1 But Not ICAM-1 Expression by Upregulation of PPAR-γ in Human Endothelial Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2011, Vol.15 No.3 6 157-162 (6 pages)
Vascular inflammation process has been suggested to be an important risk factor in the development of atherosclerosis. Recently we reported that induction of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-Ճ (PPAR-Ճ) selectively inhibits vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) but not intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-Ձ-activated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). In this study, we investigated whether genipin inhibits... -
Involvement of ROS in Curcumin-induced Autophagic Cell Death

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2011, Vol.15 No.1 1 1-8 (8 pages)
Many anticancer agents as well as ionizing radiation have been shown to induce autophagy which is originally described as a protein recycling process and recently reported to play a crucial role in various disorders. In HCT116 human colon cancer cells, we found that curcumin, a polyphenolic phytochemical extracted from the plant Curcuma longa, markedly induced the conversion of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3)-I to LC3-II and degradation of sequestome-1 (SQSTM1) which is a...
