Contact lenses are considered medical devices and can be worn to correct vision, or for cosmetic or therapeutic reasons. Recent reports of bacterial corneal ulcer in cosmetic contact lens wearers prompted the evaluation of the possible sources of bacterial contamination such as saline solution, contact lens case, concurrent conjunctivitis, lens surface abnormalities, inadequate temperature and duration of disinfection, poor hygiene in contact lens handling, and aging of the lens. For this study, 15 people wearing contact lenses participated and were examined for microbial contamination in their storage case and contact lenses. Bacteria were isolated from 31 specimens. Colonies of bacteria inoculated at 0.03 mL formed one strain of 1-10 CFU, one strain of 10-100 CFU, four strains of 100-500 CFU, three strains of 500-1,000 CFU, and twenty-two strains of more than 1,000 CFU. Contact lens cleaning solution stored for three days formed more than 10 strains of 1,000 CFU, five days of storage incubated 12 strains. As a result of identification by the Vitek system intended for separate 10 strains Gram positive cocci and Gram negative bacilli strains of 11 strains, Gram positive cocci is Staphylococcus spp. 28.5%, were separated by Micrococcus spp. 14.3.%, Gram negative bacilli bacteria were separated by Acinetobacter spp. and Psedomonas spp. is 14.3%, Alcaligens spp. 9.5%. According to the results, contact lens cleaning solution should be replaced daily for contact lenses stored in a protective case. If not the risk of serious bacteria contamination is possible. Further maintenance of protective cases calls for cases to be placed in boiling water and dried completely. Also thorough hand washing before handling contact lenses is recommended. Proper knowledge for handling contact lenses is considered a method to minimize contamination from microorganisms.
