This study aims to design a writing meditation program targeting women in domestic violence shelters (which will be referred to as ‘shelter women’ hereafter) in order to understand effectiveness of the program. The study first tried to summarize definitions of ‘writing meditation’. Writing meditation pursues self-reflection, self-treatment and life of genuine meditation beyond this social universality. Regarding the theoretical backgrounds of the program, the study researched definitions, roles and others of ‘1. domestic violence, 2. mindfulness and 3. disclosure’. The three definitions are the ultimate key words that would influence the entire research process and results of this study. The program of this study carried out programs of quantitative research and qualitative research. The program was first conducted by a pilot research. Participants in the pilot research are a group of domestic violence assailants. As for the participants in the writing meditation program, an experimental group of 12 individuals and a control group of other 12 individuals were selected. The qualitative research carried out after the quantitative research was finished mainly focused on individual reflection, emotional experience and internal changes. This study is considered academically significant in that it had proved how letters which are the most popular tool in societies as well as writing to use the mechanism of mindfulness can be good chances for self-treatment and life of meditation. The results of this program which had been carried out with a focus lied on beginner mediators’ understanding on mediation, convenience of accessibility and continuity satisfied a great part of the significance of the research and there, the shelter women were included in the beginner mediators. Despite that, the diversity of the program via not only the shelter women but also gender-, age- and academic background-based discrimination capacity has not been yet secured.
