This article aims at evaluating not only the accomplishments of the new
National Museum for five years(2006~2010) after its opening to the public in
October, 2005 but also its future challenges. This article has examined
mainly the activities shown in a series of the annual reports of the National
Museum of Korea during the five years. Basically its activities in 2005 have
been excluded because the new museum had been opened in October, 2005
and they could not be operated for a whole year properly.
Before museum evaluation some discussion on philosophy in museum
management and evaluation standards have been done. In this article mainly
quantitative evaluations have been done rather than qualitative ones. So
statistics on various crucial variables have been reviewed and compared
including their scopes and changing trends for the consecutive five
years(2006~2010): they include the statistics on visitor's number, facilities,
collection management, budget and staffs, special exhibitions and permanent
exhibition, educational programmes, academic activities, and international
exchanges. So it must be mentioned that there are some inevitable limitations
in this article because it has depended on quantitative evaluation methods.
The result of the evaluations turns out that the new National Museum of
Korea has been managed more actively in all arenas for the five years after
its reopening and diverse exhibitions along with programmes have been
operated than ever before. But there are many things to be desired; in the
future it needs more thoughtful considerations on what the National Museum of Korea is like and what it should do, improvements in communication with
visitors, more efforts to build up comfortable museum environments for
visitors' satisfaction, more systemic and academic collection management,
continuous developments in exhibitions and educational programmes,
strengthening academic abilities, and encouraging the visitors' critical thinking
upon their learning free from all kinds of biases including nationalism.
Basically more efforts for quality upgrading of all museum arenas are
essentially demanded as well.
