The role of art museum is to collect, preserve, research, and investigate art for cultural development and improvement of the quality of life through education, exhibition, and interchange activities as a cultural complex space. In today's rapidly changing social circumstance, art museums need to consider what current issues they face and to prepare for the challenges they have to deal with in the near future. The history of private art museum has become 73 years. At this moment, this study examined the present state of private art museum in Korea by regional groups focusing on the characteristics of management. More specifically, the study looked at the various forms of private art museum, the problem of human resource, cooperative system between museums, and also identity issue that each private art museum has. In terms of the current problems and improvements, this study presented objective and practical suggestions by dividing into management, exhibition, marketing, and service based on my practical experiences as an administrator at one of the private art museums in Korea. In summary, the overall challenges of private art museums with suggestions are as follows; the need for a paradigm shift in private art museum management, strengthening the network between museums, make-up for identity of each private art museum, building a culture of giving, living museum through the improvement and evaluation of registration system, acting museum, museum with a sense of identity, with all of the museum, and clean museum.
