The combustion characteristics of various torrefied biomass was investigated using an experimental combustion furnace under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. The biomass used in this study were waste wood, PKS (palm kernel shell), and EFB (empty fruit bunch). The compositions of emission gases from the combustion of biomass samples were analyzed and compared with those of SRF(solid refuse fuel). From isothermal combustion experiments, it was found that the combustions of SRF and torrefied EFB were more incomplete than those of torrefied PKS and waste wood because the combustion rates of SRF and torrefied EFB were faster than those of other samples. It was also found that the NOx concentration of the emission gas from the combustion of torrefied EFB was the highest, and the SO2 concentrations were affected by the sulfur contents of raw samples before torrefaction. From non-isothermal combustion experiments, it was found that the combustion of torrefied biomass occurred at lower temperature than that of SRF.
