This study examined how the masterpiece appreciation activities have effects
on the emotional intelligence of first-grade elementary students. For this
purpose, a total of 27 first grade students, including 16 boys and 11 girls in D
city participated in the masterpieces appreciation activities, through the TV
program "Art Expedition Party" aired in EBS. For the measuring tool, the
Emotional Intelligence Scale suggested by Gwak Yun-jeong(2008) was used,
and for data processing, the paired Samples t-test was performed based on
pre-post variation. As a result, the research hold that the masterpiece
appreciation activities watching EBS "Art Expedition" TV program had positive
effects on the elementary students of lower grades in terms of emotional
intelligence. These results are supported by the studies of Kim Shin-ji(2006)
and Park Ji-hyeon(2009), who have reported that the masterpiece appreciation
activity effectively improves emotional intelligence of children. In addition, the
results are consistent with the study of Yi Yun-yong(2009) which showed that
the language activities through the paintings watching helped toddlers to share
their thoughts and feelings with their friends, and this process of activities in
which they empathized and accepted the views of each other gave a positive
impact on the emotional intelligence of toddlers. Furthermore, the results are in
line with the study of Gong Won-ah who argued that the integrated art
appreciation activity has a positive effect on the emotional intelligence of
toddlers, and the study of Song Hye-young(2007) who revealed that the
paintings appreciation activities in accordance with the life theme has a positive
effect on emotional intelligence development of young children.
