The research involved in elementary environmental history education has been limited due
to the insufficient research in environmental history education and difficulties in modifying the
whole basic frame of the current education course to reconstruct the environmental history
class. To overcome these limitations, this research investigated the utilization and development
of the instruction materials of elementary environmental history education based on the
teaching and learning methods of storytelling with existing environmental education contents.
To achieve this goal, the category was divided into environmental factors which affected
human history, environmental changes due to human activities, human thoughts and attitudes
about environment on the basis of environmental history content category standard of
Hughes(2006), environmental history education content selection criteria of Kim(2011) and
national environmental education standard guideline suggested by Jung et al.(2007). Secondly,
a total of 15 contents were selected by categorizing common cases with history field of
elementary school social study among the environmental history contents researched and
published in Korea. Lastly, the table of contents of elementary social studies was revised, and
the teaching and learning process plans were developed for elementary environmental history
class.
