The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of music therapy on
change of self-concept and abstinence self-efficacy for patients with
alcohol-use disorder. The participants of this study were in-patients of
diagnosed as alcohol-use disorder and were in A and S hospital located in
Seoul. Out of the 21 participants, 12 were in experimental group participated
in 12 music activities, while 9 were in control group had daily free time.
Two instruments were adopted to each of the experimental and control
groups in pre-test and post-test: self-concept developed by Song(1995) which
was revised by Lee(2002)and Son(2013), and abstinence self-efficacy
developed by Diclemente, Carbonari, Montomerym, & Hughtsm(1994) which
was translated by Kim(1996). The results show that the self-concepts and
abstinence self-efficacy in experimental group increased significantly
compared with the control group. Also, there were statistical significant
differences between two groups on self concept(social, family and
emotion-self concept)and abstinence self-efficacy (negative emotion and social
pressure). According to this study, it was revealed that music therapy is
effective intervention on changing of self-concept and increasing of
abstinence self-efficacy for patients with alcohol–use disorder.
