점자 사용자들 사이에 약자의 활용이 자료의 부피를 줄이고 읽기 속도를 증가시킬 것이라는 인식이 광범위하게 퍼져 있다. 이 연구에서는 현행 ‘한국 점자 규정’의 한글점자 약자 중 받침 쌍시옷과 ‘ㅓㅇ’ 약자 폐지 및 소괄호의 점형 변경이 점자 자료의 부피와 점자 읽기 속도에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 검증하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 시각장애인들이 널리 구독하고 있는 “점자새소식” 4개 호를 조사한 결과 받침 쌍시옷과 ‘ㅓㅇ’ 약자를 폐지하고 소괄호의 점형을 변경할 경우, 부피가 1.3%(총 1,358줄 중 18줄) 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 시각장애 성인 20명과 시각장애 중학생 24명을 대상으로 현행 ‘한국 점자 규정’을 적용한 자료와 한글점자 약자 축소 및 소괄호 점형 변경 내용을 적용한 자료의 읽기 속도를 비교한 결과 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구의 결과는 한글점자 약자 일부의 축소와 소괄호 점형 변경이 점자 자료 부피를 미미한 수준에서 증가시키기는 하지만, 점자 읽기 속도에는 유의미한 차이를 가져오지 않는다는 점을 시사한다.
A perception that the use of contraction would reduce the volume of Braille materials and increase the reading speed has been pervasive among braille users in Korea. The purpose of this investigation was to identify whether the elimination of contractions for final consonant ‘ssang-si-ot’ and ‘eo yi-eeung’ and the modification of braille symbol for open-&-close parenthesis influence the volume of braille materials and the reading speed. The findings indicated that there was an increase of 1.3% in the volume of braille materialswhen aforementioned changes were applied. It was also found that there was no significant difference in reading speed among braille users who participated in this study. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the elimination of contractions for final consonant ‘ssang-si-ot’ and ‘eo yi-eeung’ and the modification of braille symbol for open-&-close parenthesis did not have a significant impact on either the volume nor the reading speed of braille materials.
