The purpose of this study is to investigate general students’ attitudes toward
students with disability. A total of twenty eight students participated in this
study. They were selected from a 6th grade inclusive class at D elementary
school in G city in Gyeonggi Province. D elementary school is a small-sized one
with two classes for each school year. Accordingly, the participant students had
been educated together with seven disabled students for six years from the first
to sixth grade. Their attitudes were measured by Q-Methodology, a research
method used to study people's subjectivity. Three attitudinal patterns emerged
from the data analysis. The first pattern is that “I am an active supporter and
advocater for disabled people.” The second pattern is that “Disabled people are
community members who need social support.” The last one is that “Disabled
people need to make efforts by themselves to be part of community.” In contrast
to previous studies, all the patterns are positive thoughts about people with
disability. The findings of this study clearly indicate that students who
experience a long term intensive inclusion have positive attitudes toward
disabled students, compared to those who do not.
