The new subject tilted Mulsang(meaning Physical Science in Korean) was
introduced as a secondary school science subject during the period of the fourth
Joseon Education Ordinance (1943-1945) from Imperial Japan. The purpose of this
study was to trace the processes and historical backgrounds of the settlement for
Mulsang subject in Korean education. In addition, this study revealed the
contents of Mulsang subject as used in textbooks and curriculum at the times.
The term of Mulsang, relative to the term of Biology, was invented as a new
subject’s title. This study found out that it was unlikely that the subject of
Mulsang was introduced to emphasize an integrated science, which combined
physics, chemistry, and earth science all together. Instead, it was highly likely
intended to reduce the number of school subjects and science class hours during
the extreme situation of the Pacific War. Imperial Japan promulgated the new
Mulsang syllabus for five-year secondary school in 1942, then a revised new
syllabus of Mulsang was prepared for 4-year secondary school in 1943. The
Colonial Joseon Government General adopted the new subject and syllabus of
Mulsang for secondary school science, which was based on the revised new
course of study made by Imperial Japan in 1943. Imperial Japan and Colonial
Joseon published a new textbook named Mulsang in the name of
Jungdeunghakkyo -Kyokwaseo-Jusikhoesa(中等學校敎科書株式會社) that has
monopolized rights of publishing the national textbooks. Since 1944, a revised
textbook "Jungdeng-Mulsang(中等物象)" was issued and provided for male and
female students separately.
