A/r/tography is a form of arts-based research that has emerged recently, which has developed centering around the professors and graduate students of the University of British Columbia in Canada and is a research methodology which emphasizes integration with life, collaborative practice, and ongoing research process. This study would pay attention to the possibility of a new approach in the art education research to investigate the theoretical background and characteristics of A/r/tography. First, this study would investigate crisis and change in qualitative research which became the background of studies of A/r/tography and discuss the arts-based research and action research and their influences. Second, this study would examine the formation process of the A/r/tography and the characteristics of A/r/tography, centering around the key words that show its characteristics, such as in-between space, rendering, rhizomatic research, practice community and relational inquiry. In addition, this study would explore various examples of practice in what way A/r/tography is applied and appears in the actual research.
