This study analyzes the variables affecting the career maturity of Seoul middle school
students using data from the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study of 2010. Taking note of
recent trends in career education, the study was to examine the effects of school career
education in person-level and school-level. Considering the hierarchical characteristics of the
data, HLM(hierarchical linear model) was used. The results showed that school-related variables
in person-level influencing career maturity were peer relationship, student’s subjective evaluation
of the school, career counseling and career assessments. However upper-school visits and
experimental activities were not significant. Among the school-level variables, school average
SES was the only variable affecting the student’s career maturity. Career education utilizing
talent donation, and career guidance using in-school or outside resources were not significant.
Based on these results, the study discusses shortcomings of current career education practices
and presents suggestions for the future.
