This paper is a review of situation in the field of performance study for the
revitalization of future oral literature study. To that end, I examine a trend of
folk drama researchers in the early 2000s. The discussion is proceed in the
following order, exposing of my experience, meta review of the trend of oral
literature study, and a trend of folk drama researchers in the early 2000s. What
was discussed as follows.
The frame named oral literary study is omnipresent around us. That frame
is operated as a discipline both in and out of the field of oral literature. We
can confirm that discipline is operated in statements, such as follows: ‘Not all
Korean literary research or not all oral literacy research’, ‘an area not included
in the folk drama’, ‘go on to the folklore research.’ That discipline make reduce
the oral literacy world.
And now the restriction which reduce the oral literacy world do not only
appear in the personal experience dimension. Beyond my experience, the
restriction appear on the other oral literature researchers. To examine the
reviews of a trend of folk drama study which is examined by several oral
literature researchers, ‘a meager result of the folk drama study’ is pointed out repeatedly begging in 2006. But That is not appropriate. The review is
examined as the prejudice of folk dramatism in the restriction named oral
literature, so it is judged a meager or stagnant. Above the point out is modified
as ‘a meager result of study in the conventional field of the folk drama.’
Folk drama researchers attempt the turn as performance study in the early
2000s. The turn is noteworthy, because it form a collective stream. The
movement of folk drama researchers is characterized as performance field and
study group. It is appropriate, they are not called as the folk drama researchers
but performance researchers. They are free from the oral literary restriction or
conventional frame of oral literature. But their prospect is not bright. We don’t
know the movement of them is a temporary phenomenon or make the another
world.
Nevertheless, for vigor of the oral literature we watch the turned movement
of folk drama researchers in the early 2000s. A measure which converge them
who are gather around living performance field and small study group is
needed. It is not excluded as for peripheral or informal any more. Because
the great turn or vigor of newness always come from peripheral or informal
area.
