국문초록

다문화가정의 가정사용 언어가 자녀의 언어능력 발달에 미치는 효과에 대해서는 이중언어의 사용이 자녀의 언어능력에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 연구결과들과 가정에서 부모언어의 사용이 우리말능력의 발전에 부정적인 요인으로 작용한다는 서로 상반된 연구결과들이 보고되어 왔다. 이 연구는이중언어 사용 환경에 있는 중도입국 다문화가정 초등학생과 중학생들의 가정언어가 언어능력발달에미치는 영향을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 국가수준학업성취도평가 국어과목 기출문항을 부모언어로 번역한 평가도구로 26개 초등학교 127명과 26개 중학교 171명의 중도입국 다문화학생의 언어능력이 측정되었고 수집된 자료는 다변량 7원 분산분석과 단일변량 6원 분산분석 방법에 의하여 분석되었다. 연구의 결과는 이중언어 사용에 의한 국어능력 발달지연 효과가 전혀 발견되지 않았을 뿐만 아니라, 중학생의 경우에는 오히려 이중언어를 사용하는 집단이 국어과목의 모든 하위영역에서 한국어만 사용하는 집단이나 부모언어만을 사용하는 집단보다 평균점수가 통계적으로 유의하게 높은 것으로나타났다. 이중언어 사용의 긍적적 효과와 달리 동일한 검사도구를 사용하는 성취도 검사에서 일반적으로 관측되는 학년의 효과가 없었으며, 일반적으로 다문화가정 자녀의 국어 성취도 검사에서 기대되는 재학기간의 효과도 나타나지 않았다. 이중언어와 이중문화 환경에서 통합된 정체성을 가진 다문화가정 자녀들의 성공적인 육성이 향후 국가적 자산이 될 수 있음이 논의되었다.

영문초록

The purpose of this study is analyze the effect of family-languages in learning Korean for foreign-born multi-cultural elementary and middle school students. 127 elementary students and 171 middle school students are examined using National Assessment of Educational Achievement(NAEA) items. The 7 factor multi-variate ANOVA and 6 factor uni-variate ANOVA are used for the analysis. The results show that not only using two languages in family has no learning deficit effect on Korean, but also bilingual group has statistically higher average scores than Korean only group and mother’s language only group in middle school students in all sub-areas of Korean subjects. The successful bringing up of the multi-cultural children with balanced identity will be an national asset for the future.
