In Korea, some provinces have tried to open and operate the Future School. These efforts
are designed on the model of the School of the Future in Philadelphia which was
established and supported by the Philadelphia School District and the Microsoft. Thus, the
purpose of the study is to examine researches on the School of the Future in Philadelphia
and suggest better ways for the Future Schools in Korea.
The results suggest that for the purpose of the Future School, preservice teachers need to
take more courses on the ICT and teachers need to participate in the on-the job training for
strengthening ICT-related capacity.
Second, for expanding the concept of the Future School to regular schools, schools need
to find and develop new models for continuous operation without extra financial supports
from school districts or government.
Third, for the purpose of the Future School, schools need to have more autonomy in
teaching-leaning activity and curriculum, because ICT technology and high tech instructional
equipment do not guaranty the accomplishment of the purpose of the Future School. Also, it
is needed to implement systematic reforms and changes for the Future School.
Finally, schools and district offices need to expand communication channel with parents
using ICT technology. When applied to the communication with parents, the ICT technology
makes communication with parents easy and parents and teachers can share more easily
information on students.
