This article is to compare and analyze the descriptions of events related to
democratic development, one of the values stipulated in respect for patriots, like
May 10 Election, April 19 Revolution, and May 18 Democratization Movement and
find a way to improve it. Those values stipulated in respect for patriots can be
criteria to describe the history textbooks because they are already agreed among
people, although people cannot easily reach the criteria to describe a specific event
in history. The cases selected for analysis are the events which contributed to the
establishment of people's sovereignty and fit the value of democratic development,
the procedural democracy - the judicial and political rights, claimed as the most
important and basic step for the democracy by Sartori. The 8 high school history
textbooks failed to emphasize the importance of democratic characteristics of the
May 10 Election in South Korea, compared to the August 25 Election in North
Korea. In description of April 19 Revolution, the textbook written by Kyohaksa
didn't fully reveal the essence of March 15 fraught election fabricated by Rhee
Government, which led to it and failed to criticize the May 16 military coup. In
the description of May 18 Democratization Movement, Kyohaksa was not that
serious in dealing with the Movement and didn't highlight the basic characteristics
of the event well. To make high school history textbooks better next time, these
shortcomings should be corrected.
